 # DeskVNC — One Workspace for Remote Access and AI-Assisted Computer Control

DeskVNC is a free, open-source remote access application that brings VNC, RDP, and SSH connections together in one unified workspace. Designed for Windows, macOS, and Linux, it helps developers, IT administrators, system engineers, support teams, and self-hosting enthusiasts manage remote machines without constantly switching between separate applications.

One Application for All Your Remote Machines

Managing multiple computers and servers often means juggling different remote desktop clients, SSH terminals, connection profiles, credentials, and support tools. DeskVNC simplifies this workflow by bringing remote connections into a single application.

Users can organize their machines in a central library, save connection settings, connect with a double-click, and work across multiple remote systems using tabs and split-screen panes. Whether you are accessing a Windows desktop through RDP, a Linux machine through VNC, or a remote server through SSH, DeskVNC keeps your workflow organized in one place.

VNC, RDP, and SSH in One Workspace

DeskVNC supports three widely used remote access protocols:

  • VNC: Connect to remote graphical desktops, including compatible Linux and macOS systems.
  • RDP: Access Windows desktops and supported remote applications.
  • SSH: Connect to remote servers, use terminal sessions, transfer files through SFTP, and work with tunnels.

The application also includes practical tools such as clipboard integration, file transfers, session recovery, network discovery, Wake-on-LAN, and multiple-session layouts. These capabilities help users handle everyday administration and troubleshooting tasks without repeatedly changing applications.

AI-Assisted Remote Computer Control Through MCP

One of DeskVNC’s distinctive features is its optional Model Context Protocol (MCP) integration. The application includes an MCP server called dvv, allowing compatible AI agents to interact with remote computers through the same VNC, RDP, and SSH connections that users already use.

With an appropriately configured agent, users can enable workflows in which an AI agent opens a remote machine, observes its screen, clicks controls, types text, reads terminal output, and performs supported tasks. This can be useful for routine system checks, troubleshooting workflows, repetitive desktop operations, and remote administration.

Importantly, the remote machine does not need a separate DeskVNC AI agent installed for ordinary VNC, RDP, or SSH access. The agent uses the existing remote connection. This can be particularly useful in environments where installing additional software on the target computer is not permitted.

DeskVNC also includes safeguards intended to keep people in control. Users can take over a session, and the agent must work within the application's control rules. Screen changes can invalidate stale actions, while password and certificate prompts remain under human control. The exact capabilities depend on the connection type, permissions, and configuration.

Remote Support Beyond the Local Network

DeskVNC also supports attended remote assistance through invitations and machine IDs. A person requesting help can initiate a support session and approve the connection on their computer. The helper can then connect without requiring the person to configure a traditional VPN or manually forward ports in supported scenarios.

The person receiving assistance remains involved in the process and can choose whether to allow viewing, control, or supported command execution. They can also revoke access or end the session.

A companion DeskVNC Support application is available for supported platforms, including a no-install support workflow. Network conditions and configuration determine whether a direct connection or relay is used.

Security and Privacy Considerations

DeskVNC is built with an emphasis on keeping connection credentials and access decisions under the user's control. Passwords are stored through the operating system's credential facilities where supported, rather than being kept directly alongside ordinary machine profiles. The application also provides host and certificate verification workflows.

The project states that it does not require an account and does not include telemetry. Its source code is publicly available, allowing developers and organizations to inspect the implementation, review its security model, report issues, and contribute improvements.

As with any remote access application, users should follow secure credential practices, verify the identity of remote hosts, restrict access to trusted people and agents, and review permissions before enabling remote control.

Who Can Benefit from DeskVNC?

Developers and software engineers: Access remote development machines, use SSH terminals, and manage different systems from a single workspace.

IT administrators and MSPs: Organize client machines, handle support requests, and manage Windows, Linux, and macOS systems across different environments.

Self-hosting and homelab enthusiasts: Connect to home servers, virtual machines, and remote desktops while keeping connection details organized.

Technical support teams: Help users remotely through approved support sessions and reduce the need to switch between separate tools.

AI-agent developers: Explore MCP-based computer interaction and automation using established remote access protocols, including environments where installing another agent on the target machine is impractical.

Free and Open Source

DeskVNC is available under the MIT or Apache 2.0 license. The application is free to use, with no account requirement or paid tier restricting its core features. Optional rollout, training, and support services are available through Ripeflow LLC.

The project is actively developed, and its maintainers welcome bug reports, interoperability findings, and contributions from the open-source community.
