Does a Job Offer Still Matter in Express Entry Canada?

For years, a valid job offer could add 50 or even 200 points to a CRS score. That made it one of the most valuable things a candidate could have in Express Entry Canada. In March 2025, IRCC removed those additional points for arranged employment. Many candidates concluded that job offers no longer mattered. That isn’t quite right.
What changed in 2025
The change was specific: the additional CRS points for a qualifying job offer were removed from the Comprehensive Ranking System. The government’s stated reasons included concerns about fraud, with some job offers, and especially LMIAs, being bought and sold. Candidates who previously relied on those points saw their scores drop overnight, and some fell below the cut-offs they had been targeting.
What didn’t change is that a job offer is still part of the eligibility rules for some programs, and it still affects other parts of an application.
The Federal Skilled Worker points grid
Before a candidate’s CRS score even matters, Federal Skilled Worker applicants must score at least 67 out of 100 on the FSWP selection grid. This is a separate test from CRS. One of the factors on that grid is arranged employment, worth up to 10 points. For candidates sitting just below 67, a valid job offer can be the difference between being eligible for FSWP and not being eligible at all.
The Federal Skilled Trades Program
For tradespeople, a job offer can be an eligibility requirement. FSTP candidates need either a valid offer of full-time employment for at least a year, or a certificate of qualification from a Canadian province or territory. A tradesperson without a certificate needs the job offer simply to qualify for the program.
Proof of funds
FSWP and FSTP applicants normally have to show settlement funds. One exception is for candidates who are currently authorized to work in Canada and have a valid job offer. For someone already working in Canada, that exemption can remove a major hurdle, especially for applicants with families, where the required amount is higher.
Provincial nominations
Many provincial nominee streams, including enhanced streams linked to Express Entry, require or favour a job offer from an employer in the province. A provincial nomination still adds 600 CRS points. So, indirectly, a job offer can still lead to the biggest CRS boost available.
What counts as a valid job offer
Not every offer letter meets Express Entry’s definition. Generally, the offer must be for full-time, non-seasonal work of at least one year, in a skilled occupation, and usually supported by an LMIA unless the worker already holds a qualifying LMIA-exempt work permit with that employer. A letter saying “we’d love to have you” isn’t enough. Candidates should be cautious of anyone selling job offers or LMIAs. It’s illegal, and it can lead to a misrepresentation finding that bars the candidate for five years.
Where this leaves candidates
A job offer is no longer a shortcut to a high CRS score, but it hasn’t become irrelevant. It can make someone eligible for FSWP, it’s essential for many FSTP applicants, it can remove the proof of funds requirement, and it can open the door to a provincial nomination. Anyone comparing how these pieces fit together will find it useful to look at the full structure of Express Entry Canada, because the value of a job offer now depends heavily on which program and which province a candidate is targeting.
