Holiday overspending is rarely one big purchase. It is forty small ones with no total. Here is a simple way to fix it in about twenty minutes, with only paper.
Step 1: Set one total
Take last year's holiday spending (check card statements) and decide whether to match it, cut 10-20%, or set a firm cap. Write the number at the top of the page.
Step 2: List every person, then a budget per person
Include the people you forget: teachers, coworkers, the mail carrier, a host gift. Give each a dollar amount. If the sum is over your total, trim the list or the amounts now, not in December.
Step 3: Track in three columns
Idea, price, status (bought, shipped, wrapped). Keeping status stops double-buying and last-minute panic.
Step 4: Count the hidden costs
Shipping, wrapping, cards and postage, travel, the party you host, food. Give them their own line so they do not eat the gift budget.
Step 5: Review weekly
Every Sunday add up spending so far. A ten-second check beats a January surprise.
Do not forget the plan for the day itself
Write a simple schedule and menu so the cooking and travel are not decided at the last minute.
I put all of this into a printable Holiday Gift List and Budget Planner (gift list with per-person budgets, card and shipping tracker, spending summary, menu and schedule): https://payhip.com/b/KUdnC
Prefer a bigger set? The Family Budget & Money Bundle includes it with debt, savings and meal planners: https://payhip.com/BlackPlanners
