"Getting Promoted to Team Lead Terrified Me More Than It Excited Me"

Aditya got promoted to team lead after four solid years as an individual contributor, purely on the strength of his technical work. The problem was, nobody had actually taught him how to lead people — delegating, giving feedback, managing conflict between team members were all completely unfamiliar territory he was expected to just figure out.

His first month as a lead was rough. He either micromanaged out of anxiety or avoided giving feedback entirely out of discomfort, with no real middle ground. A senior colleague finally suggested he treat leadership as an actual skill to learn, not something that should just come naturally with a title change.

Aditya enrolled in a leadership and business management course specifically built for newly promoted technical leads like himself, covering practical scenarios — real feedback conversations, delegation frameworks, conflict handling — instead of abstract leadership theory.

Six months later, his team's internal feedback scores had genuinely improved, and Aditya himself felt far less anxious walking into difficult conversations he used to avoid entirely. His advice to anyone recently promoted into their first leadership role: technical skill got you the promotion, but it won't automatically make you good at leading people. It's worth exploring structured leadership development rather than assuming you'll simply figure it out under pressure.
