Visual hierarchy defines how content is viewed. There is a pecking order which means that some content needs to be viewed first while others second, third, and on down the line.
The most important content may be at the top of the hierarchy. Like a writer that writes an interesting lead, the top of the hierarchy can create similar impact, efficiently moving the viewer from one piece of content to the next.
