After 3 weeks navigating China's transport system, here's everything I learned about getting around efficiently.
High-Speed Trains (Best Option)
China's high-speed rail is world-class:
- Speed: 300-350 km/h
- Coverage: Connects all major cities
- Price: ¥200-800 depending on distance
- Booking: Use Trip.com (English interface, accepts foreign cards)
Train Classes:
- Business Class: Lie-flat seats, ~3x the price of second class
- First Class: Wider seats, more space, ~1.6x price
- Second Class: Standard seats, perfectly comfortable, best value
Pro tip: Book 2-3 days ahead for popular routes.
Metro Systems
Every major city has one. They're:
- Clean, fast, and cheap (¥2-7 per trip)
- English signs in all major cities
- Open 6am-11pm typically
Taxis & Ride-Hailing
- DiDi: China's Uber. Works in English through WeChat mini-program
- Regular taxis: Have your destination written in Chinese
- Cost: ¥15-50 for most city trips
Navigation Tools
- Apple Maps: Works in China, has English, but 6 months behind
- Baidu Maps: Most accurate but Chinese-only
- aihubai.cn: AI travel assistant with offline maps that overlay English labels on Chinese POI data
Key Tips
- Download offline maps before you arrive
- Screenshot your destination in Chinese — Show to taxi drivers
- Metro is king in cities — Fastest, cheapest, no language barrier
- Book trains on Trip.com — English interface, no hassle
- Keep your ID/passport — Required for train tickets
China's transport infrastructure is incredible and affordable.
