Money Anxiety in Tech: High Salary, High Fear (How to Break the Loop)

Money Anxiety in Tech: High Salary, High Fear (How to Break the Loop)

When I crossed the $180,000 annual compensation mark as a software engineer, I genuinely believed my financial stress was over forever. Growing up in a lower-middle-class household where every unexpected car repair triggered a family crisis, I was convinced that reaching a top-tier tech income was the ultimate antidote to money anxiety.

I was completely wrong.

Instead of feeling peaceful, my financial anxiety simply mutated. At $60k, I worried about paying rent. At $180k, I obsessively checked portfolio trackers sixteen times a day. I worried about layoffs, tech sector recessions, vesting cliff expirations, inflation eroding my savings, and whether I was investing aggressively enough compared to my peers.

I found myself buying $6 specialty coffees without thinking, but agonizing for four days over buying a $40 ergonomic mouse pad. Every market dip felt like an existential threat. Despite having two years of living expenses in liquid reserves, I operated with the constant, irrational fear that one bad performance review would render me homeless.

This phenomenon is rampant in the technology sector. To understand why high earnings don't automatically cure fear, I built Financial Anxiety Radar, a free diagnostic tool to help high earners decode their subconscious relationship with money.
