The Problem
If you have ever spent hours browsing Etsy for the perfect SVG cut file for your Cricut, only to find that every design looks the same, you know the frustration.
Crafters, DIY enthusiasts, and small business owners making vinyl decals, wall stencils, and laser-cut products all share the same pain point: finding unique designs is hard, and custom design work is expensive.
Hiring a graphic designer for a single stencil? $30-100. Buying pre-made SVGs? $3-8 each, and they are never exactly what you want.
The Solution: StencilForge
I built StencilForge — an AI-powered stencil and cut file generator. You describe what you want in plain English, and the AI generates a high-contrast stencil-ready design.
How it works:
- Choose your machine (Cricut, Silhouette, Laser Cutter, or Hand-cut)
- Select a category (Home Decor, Signs, Nature, Monograms, Holiday, Crafts)
- Pick your layer complexity (Single to Multi-Layer)
- Describe your design in the prompt box
- AI generates a stencil-optimized image you can download as PNG or SVG
Tech Stack
- Frontend: Next.js 15 + React 19 + Tailwind CSS v4
- AI: HuggingFace Inference API (FLUX.1-schnell model)
- Hosting: AWS EC2 + PM2 + nginx
- Payments: Stripe (Free 3/day, Pro $7.99/mo)
The key technical challenge was getting the AI to generate images that actually work as stencils. Regular AI image generation produces photos — stencils need high contrast, clean edges, and connected shapes so the stencil does not fall apart when cut.
The prompt engineering was the real work: training the model to output black-and-white, high-contrast silhouette-style images with solid shapes connected by bridges.
What I Learned About the Craft Market
SVG files are a massive market: Etsy SVG/cut file category generates millions in monthly revenue. Sellers make $3-8 per file with near-zero marginal cost.
Cricut has 7M+ users: The crafting machine market is enormous and growing. Every one of those users needs designs.
Niche templates win: Generic butterfly stencils are commodity. But "art deco butterfly stencil for 20oz tumbler wrap" — that is specific enough to convert.
SEO compounds: 15+ SEO pages targeting specific crafting queries: stencil-maker, cricut-design-generator, free-svg-cut-files, butterfly-stencils, flower-stencils, etc. Each one is a permanent traffic channel.
