My wife ALMOST got conned into the same thing, except it was for a writing job - nothing to do with IT, except that it was all online. Exact same process, lots of interviews via online communications tools. Reputable employer (who knew nothing about this scam). They even made her bid for some of the work. Then at the end, they said they were going to ship her some equipment. At that point, I said, "Wait to see if they ship it or if you have to pay for it first", the latter of which, of course, is what happened.
