Word to PDF Without Losing Formatting — What Actually Works
Nothing's more annoying than a converted PDF where the margins drift and
the fonts swap. Here's what preserves fidelity:
- LibreOffice "Export as PDF" — gold standard offline, respects layout.
- Microsoft Word's own "Save as PDF" — fine for simple docs.
- A web converter that uses a real layout engine, e.g. https://www.master-converter.com/en/tools/word-pdf?utm_source=devto&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=social_seo_w2 (pay-per-file, no sub — good if you only convert occasionally)
Common gotchas:
- Embedded fonts missing on the source machine → substitution. Always embed fonts.
- Complex tables → test a sample page first.
- Very large docs → split then convert if a tool times out.
If formatting breaks, fall back to Option 1. It rarely does.
