The trick that finally worked for me was to stop trying to make one component handle both state and side effects. Instead, I moved every async operation into a separate service layer that returns plain data, and the UI just renders that. This makes testing trivial—you mock the service, not the component. Also, if you're dealing with race conditions, use a simple request ID that you increment on each new action and ignore any response that doesn't match the latest. That one line saved me from a whole class of stale-state bugs. Once you separate concerns like this, the component code becomes almost declarative, and debugging turns into tracing data flow, not untangling logic.
