Every developer who has ever wired up an e-commerce catalog to an in-person physical till knows the exact failure point:

A walk-in customer buys the last unit in stock. Two seconds later, an online buyer checks out that exact same product because the synchronization webhook was queued behind a backlog of scheduled WordPress cron jobs.

The result is always messy: overselling, angry store owners, manual refunds, and database synchronization drift.

Most retail integrations tackle this by setting up external cloud middleware (Square, Oliver, Lightspeed, etc.). But that architecture introduces three recurring headaches:

Distributed sync over external APIs eventually falls out of lockstep.
  2. ๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ "๐—ฆ๐—ฎ๐—ฎ๐—ฆ ๐—ง๐—ฎ๐˜…": Recurring fees of $40โ€“$80/month ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜จ๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ, which eats into thin retail margins.
Vendor-restricted hardware ecosystems and clunky browser printing wrappers.

To solve this, I built ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ผ๐—ฃ๐—ข๐—ฆโ€”a high-performance, native Point of Sale built directly on top of WooCommerce.

Here is the technical breakdown of the architectural choices behind it.

Instead of streaming state changes out to a third-party cloud database and waiting for webhooks to return, choPOS treats the host WordPress MySQL database as the

The till interfaces directly with WooCommerce core via optimized, lean REST endpoints.
โ€ข ๐—”๐˜๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ฐ ๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐—ธ ๐—”๐—ฑ๐—ท๐˜‚๐˜€๐˜๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐˜€: When a barcode is scanned and tender completes, inventory is decremented within an atomic database transaction. There is no middleman microservice to disconnect, lag, or fail.

Brick-and-mortar retail environments regularly suffer from network hiccups. If a till freezes during a holiday rush, the architecture has failed.

To solve this without external server sync, choPOS leverages browser-native ๐—œ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐˜…

The product catalog, pricing matrices, barcodes, and tax rules are cached locally in the cashierโ€™s browser runtime on shift start.
If the terminal loses connectivity, transactions continue locally. Orders are staged, cryptographically signed, and queued in local persistence.
Once the network reconnects, the queue automatically syncs and reconciles orders against the database sequentially.

A checkout terminal must feel like a dedicated register, not a slow web page. We avoided heavy native desktop wrappers and implemented standard hardware listeners straight into modern browser APIs:

This accurately differentiates manual cashier typing from the rapid, contiguous burst input of a physical scanner.
Instead of relying on window.print() and annoying OS print dialogs, choPOS compiles raw ESC/POS command buffers directly to 80mm and 58mm thermal printers for silent, instantaneous cut-and-print execution.

In multi-terminal environments, balancing physical cash across shifts requires strict state isolation:

Cashiers start sessions by logging their opening cash float.
Mid-shift cash adjustments (pay-ins and pay-outs) are logged directly against the active register session ID.
End-of-shift audits compute calculated cash vs. counted cash, producing an audit-ready reconciliation report for bookkeeping.

Building a responsive counter POS inside an existing CMS comes down to keeping state local and removing unnecessary network hops. By utilizing native database queries, local browser caching, and direct peripheral listeners, you can build an enterprise-grade till without forcing clients into expensive recurring SaaS ecosystems.

I'd love to swap architectural notes in the comments below.
