Domain Transfer vs Renewal: Which One Actually Saves You Money?

When your domain is about to expire, you have two options: renew it where it is, or transfer it to another registrar. The cheaper choice is not always the obvious one.

Renewing is simple — one click, same registrar, no waiting. But renewal prices at some registrars are $19-23 a year for a .com, while others charge around $10-11 for the exact same renewal. That gap adds up fast if you own several domains.

Transferring takes a few steps: unlock the domain, get the authorisation code, start the transfer at the new registrar, and approve the confirmation email. It usually takes 5-7 days, and you pay one year of renewal at the new registrar's price — which is often the whole point, because that price can be half of what you would pay to renew.

When transferring wins: your current renewal price is high, and you have at least a week before expiry. When renewing wins: the domain expires in a few days, or the price difference is tiny.

One warning: never let a domain expire while a transfer is in progress, and never start a transfer in the last 48 hours before expiry. If it is already that close, renew first and transfer next year.

Real 2026 renewal prices, checked 24 October 2026: Spaceship $10.18, Cloudflare $10.44, Dynadot $10.88, Porkbun $11.08 — versus Namecheap $18.48, Hostinger $19.99, IONOS $20.00 and GoDaddy $22.99 for the same .com renewal.
