GoDaddy charges $22.99 to renew a .com domain. Porkbun charges $11.08. Cloudflare charges $10.44 at cost. That gap is why so many people move their domains away from GoDaddy — but a transfer done wrong can lock you out or even cost you the domain. Here is the safe way to do it.
Before you start: the 60-day rule
You cannot transfer a domain within 60 days of registering it or transferring it last time. If you are inside that window, wait — the new registrar will reject the transfer. Also, never start a transfer in the last few days before expiry. Start at least 2 weeks early.
Step 1: Unlock the domain
In GoDaddy, go to your domain list, open the domain, and turn off the domain lock. A locked domain cannot be transferred anywhere — the receiving registrar will simply fail.
Step 2: Turn off domain privacy (temporarily)
With privacy on, your real admin email is hidden, and the transfer approval email may never reach you. Turn privacy off, do the transfer, then turn it back on at the new registrar.
Step 3: Get your authorization code
This is also called the EPP code or transfer code. In GoDaddy: open the domain, find "Transfer" / "Get authorization code" and request it. GoDaddy emails it to the admin contact. Keep it safe — it is the key to the move.
Step 4: Start the transfer at the new registrar
At your new registrar (Porkbun, Cloudflare, Spaceship — compare live renewal prices first), choose "Transfer a domain", enter your domain, paste the auth code, and pay the transfer fee. Good news: the transfer usually adds one year of registration, so the fee is not wasted.
Step 5: Approve the confirmation email
Both GoDaddy and the new registrar send confirmation emails. Approve them promptly — an unapproved transfer expires and you have to start again.
Step 6: Wait 5–7 days, then verify
Transfers normally complete in 5–7 days. After that, check three things: the domain shows the new registrar, your DNS records are unchanged (your website and email still work), and auto-renew is on at the new registrar.
Mistakes that cost people their domain
- Starting a transfer 2 days before expiry and letting it expire mid-transfer
- Forgetting to unlock the domain, then blaming the new registrar
- Leaving privacy on so the approval email never arrives
- Losing the auth code and having to request it again
How much does this actually save?
Moving one .com from GoDaddy ($22.99 renewal) to Porkbun ($11.08) or Cloudflare ($10.44) saves roughly $12 every single year, per domain. With five domains, that is about $60 a year for an hour of work.
