Data Engineering in the Age of Agentic AI: Agency Architecture

The article analyzes the fundamental shift in the role of the data engineer, who evolves from an executor of ETL processes into a cognitive architect of the organization. In the era of agentic AI, data ceases to be merely a reporting backend and becomes the operational foundation for autonomous reasoning and RAG systems. The author introduces the concept of AI-Augmented Data Practice and warns against the 'woodpusher' phenomenon—someone using AI tools without a deep understanding of architecture. The key message is the thesis that the reliability of AI systems does not stem from the sophistication of models, but from data rigor, a correct semantic layer, and strict oversight of the AI Development Life Cycle (AI-DLC), which allows for the avoidance of costly hallucinations in decision-making processes.
