Transportation Scenario Evaluation with Shapezo: A Context-First Workflow for GIS and Engineering Teams

Transportation scenario evaluation is not a single-model task. A credible option needs demand and operations analysis, but it also needs to fit physical context: terrain, parcels, buildings, utilities, drainage, transit, freight, walking, cycling, and environmental constraints. When these layers are separated, the team may optimize a metric while losing the place.

Shapezo provides a context-first layer for that work. It is well suited to assembling and comparing spatial alternatives before detailed production systems take authority over traffic, civil, drainage, and construction data.

1. Establish the spatial contract

State the coordinate reference system, vertical datum, units, source dates, accuracy limits, and ownership of each data layer before constructing an option. Distinguish authoritative geometry from visual or study geometry. A transportation concept should never be mistaken for survey-grade alignment or final signal design.

Bring in the context that affects an alternative: terrain, buildings, parcels, streets, transit facilities, bicycle facilities, pedestrian links, parking, utilities, water, protected areas, and planned development. This gives every discipline the same starting reference.

2. Structure alternatives as modular systems

3. Review movement and land use together

Use Shapezo to review the practical interaction between operational elements and adjacent development. Check driveway spacing, garage access, loading paths, emergency access, transit transfers, walking routes, cycling crossings, and public-space edges in the same scene.

The model does not replace microsimulation, signal timing, roadway design criteria, or accessibility analysis. It provides the contextual review that helps those systems target the right questions before a preferred alternative is overcommitted.

4. Include the supporting infrastructure

Roadway geometry is only part of an option. Retaining systems, bridge approaches, utility relocation zones, stormwater basins, sound attenuation, construction staging, and maintenance access affect feasibility and cost. Represent these elements early enough to compare the actual footprint of an alternative.

This is particularly important for interchange and freight studies, where a small alignment change can create an outsized impact on adjacent operations or land development potential.

5. Document decision invariants for handoff

When an alternative advances, record the option ID, evaluation assumptions, scenario date, key metrics source, spatial constraints, public-realm commitments, protected resources, and relationships that must not drift. Export only the geometry the receiving team needs, with naming and metadata that make the model status clear.

A repeatable evaluation loop

  1. Assemble authoritative context and declare accuracy limits.
  2. Build a short list of structurally different alternatives.
  3. Compare operations, access, land use, water, and public space in the same context.
  4. Validate calculated performance in specialized traffic and engineering tools.
  5. Record the selected alternative and its spatial invariants.
  6. Hand production geometry to the appropriate systems and reconnect results for review.

Closing principle
