A programmer used open-source computational analysis software to decode a 30-year-old graphical mystery in Super Mario 64.
By comparing millions of word and font combinations against the pixels of the castle courtyard plaque, the analysis suggests the text reads Eternal Star and We hope so.
The inscription is on a small plaque in the castle courtyard. The image has always been so blurry that no one could read the letters, not even in modern reprints of the game.
Image analysis
Developer Mochi64 used an open-source program to test millions of word and font combinations, looking for which combination best matched the image's pixels.
According to the results, the top line reads "Eternal Star" and the bottom line reads "We hope so."

Of course, this is not a completely confirmed answer. These are simply the phrases that gave the closest possible result according to the program's calculations.
The old rumor about Luigi
The new estimate adds to decades of rumors. In the 90s, a rumor circulated that the plaque read "L is Real 2401," which many believed was a hidden message about Luigi's presence in the game.
In fact, IGN magazine had offered a $100 cash prize to anyone who managed to unlock Luigi, while the rumor was also reported by Nintendo Power magazine. The game's director, Shigeru Miyamoto, had previously noted that the team had experimented with a two-player mode before removing it.
The phrase "Eternal Star" seems to fit the setting, however, as the plaque is located under a giant statue with a star on it. Official confirmation from Nintendo is highly unlikely.
