How to choose the right computer case for your system

Selecting a PC case is a compatibility problem as much as a design choice.

ATX, MicroATX and Mini-ITX builds differ in board size and available space; case specifications also set graphics-card length limits and PSU formats.

Reverse-connector Asus and MSI motherboards need cases with matching cutouts.

PCMag evaluates cases for thermals, noise, design, materials and value.

The sizes and types of boxes

The size of the case directly depends on the size of the motherboard. The three main sizes are ATX, MicroATX and Mini-ITX.

Larger cases, known as mid-towers or large towers, offer plenty of space. Larger towers can accommodate even larger motherboards and advanced cooling systems. In contrast, Mini-ITX and MicroATX are much smaller in size and are aimed at those who want a more compact computer, although they require more careful planning to fit all the components.

Compatibility with power supplies and accessories

One important issue is power supply compatibility. Most large boxes require a full-size power supply, while very compact boxes may require special, smaller power supplies.

You should also check the specifications carefully to make sure the case has enough space for the graphics card you want to put in, as more powerful models have limitations, especially in smaller cases. Modern motherboards with cables on the back also require cases with corresponding recesses to hide the connections.

Appearance and connections

In terms of appearance, glass or clear acrylic sides and internal lighting are very popular features for those who want to see the inside of the computer.

On the front, connectivity ports typically include USB ports and audio jacks for easy connection of your devices, while larger cases offer flexibility with removable internals and options for water cooling.

Airflow and maintenance

Finally, proper airflow is essential to keep components from overheating. Fans and their proper placement determine cooling, while removable dust filters help significantly in keeping the interior clean with minimal effort.
