How to recognize scams using artificial intelligence

AI can produce convincing voice clones and videos that scammers use alongside details from social media or leaks.

Caller-ID spoofing can further obscure who is calling, so neither a familiar voice nor a displayed number reliably proves identity.

The warning signs include urgency, demands for secrecy, and requests for money or personal codes.

Verification steps include ending the call, contacting the person through a known number, or using a family code word.

How scams are set up

Scammers don’t just rely on digital voice imitation. They gather information from social media or past data breaches to make their case more convincing. They might know the name of a relative, the area they live in, or a recent purchase you made. They also use technology to display a number on your phone screen that looks familiar or authoritative, in order to gain your trust.

The signs of fraud

The most obvious sign of a scam is pressure to take immediate action. Scammers try to get you to act in a panic, claiming, for example, that a relative is in trouble with the law or that an urgent bank transfer needs to be made. They usually ask for confidentiality and may react strongly if you suggest that they hang up and call you back.

Although call quality is improving, there are details that can give away fraud, such as an unnatural pace in speech or emotions that don't fit the situation. In videos, pay attention to whether the lip movements match the sound exactly.

How to protect yourself

The most effective way to make sure everything is okay is to independently verify. If someone asks you for money or passwords, hang up and contact the person yourself, using the number you already have saved in your contacts. It is a good practice to have agreed on a “password” with your family for emergencies, so that you can confirm the identity of the person you are talking to.

Additionally, there are digital tools, such as Bitdefender Mobile Security, that can identify and block suspicious numbers. Also, the Scamio tool can analyze suspicious links or messages you receive, helping you understand if it is a fraud attempt.
