The GNOME Project has released GNOME 50.6, a maintenance update for the old-stable 50 desktop series focusing on targeted fixes across six components.
The release includes updates to GNOME Shell, Mutter, Nautilus 50.4, GLib, Orca, and Libgsf, addressing specific display, memory leak, and file handling bugs.
This update only changes six system components, with a focus on GNOME Shell, Mutter, and the Nautilus file manager. The update will automatically reach Linux distributions still using the 50 series, through the usual software update mechanisms.
Changes to GNOME Shell, Mutter, and Nautilus
In GNOME Shell, we fixed an issue that could affect the display of content through quick settings. We also fixed issues with display centers for workspace thumbnails, color filters, and login notifications remaining active.
The Mutter window manager has received fixes for auto-rotating the screen on mobile devices that do not have a dedicated switch, as well as for issues with restoring orientation and applying settings to screens. The Nautilus file manager has been upgraded to version 50.4, fixing memory and usability issues. Changes to it include indicators for files that cannot be modified, fixes to properties windows, and improvements to selection handling in replacement buttons.

The update also includes three additions to core system components. The GLib library incorporates security fixes and improves the handling of files with long names when they are moved to the trash. The Orca screen reader fixes an error that occurred when clicking on objects via its navigator, while the Libgsf library gains fixes related to the handling of specific file types.
