Rivian has acquired UK-based startup Third Dimension to accelerate its autonomy and AI roadmap.
Founded in 2024, Third Dimension builds AI systems that convert images and video into 3D worlds.
The 15-person team is joining Rivian's AI division to support advanced driver assistance and robotaxi development.
Third Dimension was founded in 2024 by Tolga Kart and Piotr Sokolski and its team consists of 15 people. The startup had raised $7 million in seed funding from investment firms including Abstract Ventures, MVP, Soma Capital and Solari Capital.
How will the new technology be utilized?
Rivian plans to use the startup's tools to transform real-world data into 3D environments. The process is expected to accelerate the development of driver assistance systems and autonomous vehicles that Rivian plans to supply to Uber. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The 15-person team will join Rivian’s AI and autonomous driving division, led by James Philbin. The deal also gives Rivian the opportunity to expand its AI hub in London.

Testing in virtual environments
Simulation is a key tool for developing and testing autonomous driving systems. Third Dimension's technology uses artificial intelligence to accurately simulate the physical world.
Combined with the data Rivian collects daily from tens of thousands of customer vehicles — taking more than 400.000 recordings per day — the new technology will allow the company to test difficult driving conditions in virtual environments, without having to wait for rare incidents to occur in real life.
