Tails 7.16 arrives with Tor Browser 16, based on Firefox ESR 153, featuring a redesigned settings interface and stricter defaults to minimize fingerprinting risks.
The release also updates the Tor client to 0.4.9.15 and resolves OpenPGP email signing issues in Thunderbird.
Version 7.16 brings Tor Browser 16, which is based on Firefox ESR 153. The new version of the browser includes updated settings with separate categories for appearance, downloads, tabs, accessibility, and languages. At the same time, settings related to the connection and security level have been reorganized. Options that could potentially compromise privacy or increase the risk of user identification have been hidden or are now accompanied by warnings.
New features and fixes
An optional feature allows replacing web page titles in windows with a generic label. This option is disabled by default, as we are evaluating potential compatibility issues with screen readers, window managers, and application switchers. In parallel, Tails updated its incognito browser to version 0.4.9.15, while the Thunderbird email client received a fix for an issue affecting encryption functionality, restoring support for encrypted and digitally signed emails.
How to upgrade
Those already running Tails 7.0 or later can perform an automatic update while keeping their files saved. If there are problems with the automatic process, users can follow the manual method. A fresh install will erase any data saved on the device. Tails 7.16 is available as a USB image for sticks and as an ISO image for DVDs and virtual machines.
