When is it worth paying for Windows security software?

An examination of whether Windows users still need paid antivirus software, looking at recent independent test scores for Microsoft Defender alongside the utility of paid third-party security suites.

Microsoft has offered built-in protection since Windows 8 was released in 2012. In Windows 11, Microsoft Defender Antivirus, part of Windows Security, automatically scans files and apps and receives regular security updates, so users don't have to download up-to-date lists of known malware themselves.

Its performance in AV-Test tests has changed significantly. In May and June 2015, it was rated 0,5 out of 6 for protection. In July and August 2026, it scored 6 out of 6 and detected 100% of threats, both in real attacks and in widespread malware. The average of the programs tested was 99,9% in real attacks and 100% in widespread malware. The results do not guarantee that every user will have exactly the same experience.

Paid plans may offer additional anti-fraud tools, privacy services, password managers, and apps for other devices. Malwarebytes advertises additional protection against file-locking attacks and exploits in its paid plan. Norton 360 Deluxe includes privacy services, parental controls, and 50GB of backup space.

There are also free options. The free Malwarebytes app can be used for an additional scan, alongside the ongoing protection of Microsoft Defender. Microsoft Edge checks websites for signs of fraud or dangerous content and warns about dangerous files being downloaded.

Installing another security program that constantly scans your computer usually disables Microsoft Defender to reduce the problems caused by running two such programs together. Also, additional browsers and maintenance tools can put a strain on your computer.

A full scan can also affect its speed. In a test reported by Tom's Guide, Cyberpunk 2077 dropped from 87 to 75 frames per second during a full scan with Malwarebytes Premium. In the same comparison, Bitdefender dropped performance from 100 to 97 frames per second.

Free third-party security programs may often display notifications or prompts to upgrade to a paid plan. Subscriptions can be worth it when their additional features meet a user's real needs. However, for most people, paying for just basic protection against viruses and common malware is not necessary.
