The 10-second rule that halves your on-call pages

Most incident pages shouldn't have been pages. The fix is not better alerting — it's a paging decision rule written down before the pager fires.

The 10-second rule. If the customer can't do their job right now, it's a page. If they can work around it in under 24h, it's a ticket. Write it at the top of your escalation tree and make on-call read it before every shift.

Three artifacts make this stick:

  1. Paging decision tree — one page, printed, at the on-call desk
  2. Handoff template — what the morning shift must see: open incidents, pages fired, customer promises made
  3. Escalation tree — who gets called at minute 0, 15, 60

We publish a complete white-label incident runbook kit built around these artifacts — agencies rebrand it and ship it with their managed contracts.
