Performance marketing is supposed to be judged on numbers: cost per lead, return on ad spend, conversion rate. In practice, plenty of agencies use "performance marketing" as a label without actually structuring their work, reporting or incentives around those numbers. Here's what to check before you hire one.
Ask what "performance" actually means to them
Some agencies use "performance marketing" to mean paid social and paid search generally. Others mean a genuinely ROI-first approach with clear targets and reporting tied to business outcomes, not just clicks and impressions. Ask them to define it in their own words, and listen for whether they talk about your business goals or just platform metrics.
Reporting should tie back to leads or sales, not vanity metrics
Impressions, reach and click-through rate are useful diagnostic numbers, but they aren't the point. Ask to see a sample report and check whether it connects spend to actual leads, sales or bookings, and whether it separates results by channel and by Gulf country if you're running campaigns in more than one.
Testing discipline matters more than a big initial plan
A genuine performance marketing agency treats the first month or two as a testing phase — multiple ad variations, audience segments and landing pages tested against each other — rather than committing your full budget to one untested approach from day one. Ask how they structure early testing and how quickly they cut what isn't working.
Check how they handle attribution across channels
If you're running paid search, paid social and other channels together, ask how they attribute a sale or lead to the right channel, and how they handle the reality that many customers see several touchpoints before converting. An agency with no clear answer here is likely reporting misleading numbers.
Incentives should be aligned with your goals, not their media spend
Be cautious of a pricing model that rewards the agency for spending more of your budget regardless of results. Ask directly how their fee structure works and whether it changes their incentive to recommend more spend versus better-targeted spend.
Questions to ask before signing
- How do you define performance marketing, specifically for our business?
- What does a typical monthly report look like, and can I see a real (anonymized) example?
- How do you structure testing in the first 60-90 days?
- How do you handle attribution across multiple channels?
- Does your fee change based on how much we spend on ads?
