From 18 to 21 November 2026, Nepal will host PGConf.Nepal 2026, the country’s fourth PostgreSQL conference. The previous events took place in 2018, 2023, and 2025. This year, the conference is expected to bring together a wider mix of participants, organisations, and countries.
The PostgreSQL community has had a long connection with Nepal. The first educational PostgreSQL talks at Kathmandu University were held back in 2009. At the time, the focus was on the university audience: students, faculty members, and young engineers. Today, PGConf.Nepal continues that work at a national scale.
The aim of the conference is to help a developing Nepal make PostgreSQL one of the practical foundations of its digital transformation. For the country, this is not just about choosing a database. It is an opportunity to build local engineering expertise around a production-grade open source platform: for public-sector systems, universities, telecom, fintech, analytics, tourism, and local IT businesses.
Last year’s conference showed that this work is already paying off. The level of local PostgreSQL expertise has grown noticeably: the questions are more mature, the talks are more practical, and there is stronger interest in operations, performance, and real-world deployments. Business interest is visible too: PostgreSQL is beginning to be seen not only as a university or enthusiast topic, but as a working technology for companies and infrastructure projects.
For international participants, PGConf.Nepal offers a rare opportunity to be among the first to bring not only PostgreSQL as a technology, but also the culture of the PostgreSQL community to the country: openness, engineering honesty, knowledge sharing, and respect for practical experience. Helping new communities grow is a natural responsibility of a mature open source community. This is how PostgreSQL spreads around the world: not through advertising, but through people, knowledge, trust, and real engineering relationships.
The conference brings together universities, local developers, companies, public-sector organisations, and international experts around this mission. The programme focuses on practical experience, professional training, real deployments, local community growth, and knowledge exchange with the global PostgreSQL community.
The conference is organised by the Nepal PostgreSQL User Group, Kathmandu University, and the Institute of Engineering, Pulchowk Campus, Tribhuvan University. This year’s general sponsor is the local company Dharma of Data. That matters: PostgreSQL in Nepal is being supported not only by universities and international contributors, but also by local businesses that see their own future in open technologies.
The organising and programme committees bring together people from Kathmandu University, IOE Pulchowk Campus, Nepal ICT Foundation, Outlines Research & Development, Dharma of Data, Beta Analytics, and UniAxial Softwares. That mix says a lot about the conference itself: it brings universities, businesses, engineering teams and people working on the country’s digital future into the same room.
Nepal is often seen through the lens of mountains and tourism, but it is also a country of nearly 30 million people, a young audience, a growing IT sector and plenty of room for digital infrastructure. PostgreSQL can be a reliable open foundation for systems that need to last, including public services, education platforms, banking and fintech products, telecom infrastructure, analytics and application development.
In 2025, the event brought together members of the international PostgreSQL community, Indian IT businesses, participants from Pakistan, Chris Travers and other PostgreSQL specialists. This year, the organisers want to expand the geography even further and are inviting speakers and attendees from more countries and companies.
The conference runs for four days. On 18-19 November, hands-on training sessions will be held at KU School of Management in Lalitpur. On 20-21 November, the main conference, including talks and workshops, will take place at the Institute of Engineering, Pulchowk Campus, Tribhuvan University.
The Call for Papers is now open. You can submit talks and workshops on PostgreSQL and its ecosystem: administration, development, performance, security, extensions, migrations, operations, architecture, education and real-world implementation stories. The submission deadline is the end of August 2026.
And there is one more strong reason to come: Nepal itself. The Kathmandu Valley, Lalitpur, ancient culture, temples, city life, mountains and the Himalayas on the horizon. It is a rare combination: a serious PostgreSQL agenda, a new audience, a growing engineering community and a place you might otherwise keep postponing until “someday”.
