China Highway Service Areas: 8 Things at Almost Every Stop

China Highway Service Areas: 8 Things at Almost Every Stop

China has close to 4,200 pairs of expressway service areas — one roughly every 50 kilometres. Most drivers use two things inside them: the toilet and the pump. That is a waste, because knowing what else is there changes what a 400-kilometre day feels like.

The 8 Things Worth Knowing

1. The toilets decide whether the stop was worth it
Squat pans still outnumber seated cubicles. Larger stops have a 第三卫生间 (accessible/family cubicle) and a nursing room. Bring your own paper — the dispensers are not reliable.

2. Free boiling water, and the noodle economy around it
Almost every stop has an 开水间 — a boiling-water room with an industrial boiler. It is free and nobody checks whether you bought anything. A ¥5 pot of instant noodles and free boiling water is the cheapest hot meal on the expressway.

3. The pump: four words are enough
Say 92加满 (fill it with 92) or 加200 for ¥200 worth. Above it are 95 and 98; 0号柴油 is for diesels.

4. EV charging: coverage solved, queues are not
Charging equipment reached 98.8% of service areas by early 2026. On an ordinary Tuesday you plug in immediately; on holiday mornings the wait is real.

5. Food: canteen tray or local counter
The canteen tray — rice plus two dishes, ¥25–40 — is dependable. The local counter at bigger stops serves regional dishes like steamed Wuchang fish at Wuchangyu service area.

6. The convenience stall covers what you forgot
Sinopec runs 易捷 (Easy Joy) stalls at its pumps: drinks, bread, braised eggs, phone cables. What I actually buy is tissues and wet wipes.

7. 司机之家: five free things for truckers
More than 1,000 "driver homes" offer rest parking, reheating food, hot water, showers and laundry at no charge. Tourists can sometimes get in if they ask nicely.

8. Some service areas are destinations
Yangchenghu Service Area outside Suzhou has four miniature gardens, a 140-metre canal, and 559 parking spaces. But that is the top sliver — most are concrete, a pump, a toilet and a kettle.

Service Area vs Parking Area

Service Area Parking Area
Parking Large, split by vehicle type A handful of bays
Toilets Always Sometimes
Fuel & charging Usually Rarely
Food & shops Yes No
Boiling water Usually Sometimes

Four Things That Catch People Out

  • The two directions are not connected. You cannot walk between them without crossing the carriageway.
  • Holiday toll-free days. Small passenger cars pay no toll during Spring Festival, Qingming, Labour Day and National Day.
  • Assuming the next one is open. Buildings close for refurbishment, and map apps do not always know.
  • Sleeping overnight. Truckers do it routinely. Car drivers do it too — park near the lit main building.
