A Small Checklist for Testing Image-to-Video AI Tools (Using a Dance Generator as the Example)

I like to test consumer AI tools the same way I would test any software: control the inputs, change one variable at a time, and write down what changes. Here is the checklist I used on KDA Firestarter Dance AI, an image-to-video tool that animates one photo with the FIRESTARTER vogue routine.

1. Define a baseline input

Start with the "ideal" photo the tool asks for: one person, full body, standing, facing the camera, arms and legs visible, plain background, even light. This is your control. If the baseline result is poor, the issue is the model, not you.

2. Change one variable at a time

From the baseline, vary a single factor per run:

  • background (plain wall vs. busy room)
  • clothing (fitted vs. loose sleeves)
  • framing (full body vs. cropped at the knees)
  • pose (front-facing vs. slight angle)

Keep notes on what degrades. In my runs, hidden hands and cropped limbs had the biggest effect on the vogue arm frames.

3. Check the output spec

Confirm what you actually get. Here it is a 12-second MP4, 16:9, 720p, with the song included. Knowing the aspect ratio up front tells you whether you need a crop step (9:16 for TikTok, Reels or Shorts).

4. Check the failure path

Good tools handle failure gracefully. This one returns the credit automatically if a generation fails, which is worth knowing before you pay.

5. Check data handling

For anything involving photos of people, read the privacy terms. Uploaded photos here are deleted after 24 hours and videos are private by default.

6. Check pricing model

One-time payment (from $9.90 for one video) with credits that do not expire, versus a subscription. For a trend-driven use case, one-time pricing is usually the better fit.

Summary

The same structured approach works for any image-to-video product: baseline, single-variable changes, output spec, failure path, privacy and pricing. It turns "it looked weird" into something you can actually act on.
