You can actually have that tree-like list-functionality today if you use Structure Builder.
I haven't made an example yet, but it should be entirely doable. There are two ways to go about it: (1) Either having a document type for dealing with sorting/hierarchies, which I tend to prefer because it allows for multiple content structures, or (2) create hierarchies with references between documents.
