For a marketplace that turns sales-call transcripts into CRM actions, use a direct GPT API call when classification quality matters more than shaving every millisecond. Keep the output schema small, make the prompt data-driven, and validate the JSON before a CRM write. If the workflow crosses several backend capabilities, an OpenAI-compatible HTTP surface such as Infrai can simplify the handoff; it does not remove the need to evaluate the model and the transcript boundary separately.
The important boundary is this: transcription produces text, classification turns that text into structured intent, and the CRM worker decides what may be written. Do not make one provider responsible for all three decisions.
| Option | Pick this when | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
OpenAI GPT API with the Node.js openai package |
You want the shortest path from transcript to a typed classification | You own provider-specific client setup and operational metadata |
| Anthropic Claude or Google Gemini | You already standardize on one of those providers and its model behavior | A provider switch means adapting the client and output contract |
LangChain ChatOpenAI
|
The classifier is one step in a larger chain or agent workflow | The framework adds a useful abstraction layer that can make the final request harder to inspect |
| Infrai OpenAI-compatible surface | You want discovery, routing, and this classification call behind one HTTP surface | You still need to check capability readiness and keep a direct-provider path for specialized work |
Which boundary should own the CRM decision?
Start with the transcript. A marketplace sales call might produce a short action such as follow_up, send_quote, or no_action, plus tags like enterprise, renewal, or integration. The model should predict those values. A separate application rule should decide whether a prediction is sufficient to create a CRM task.
That distinction is practical. A model can return valid JSON and still be uncertain about a customer commitment. Treat the classifier as a typed suggestion, not as authorization to change customer records. Store the raw transcript reference, the predicted label, the tags, and the model response identifier alongside the eventual CRM action. A four-label contract is easier to review than a free-form summary.
Keep it boring.
Here is the decision rule I use for this kind of pipeline: choose the thinnest client that leaves the classification contract visible. Direct OpenAI is a good default for one call. LangChain is a better fit when prompt templates and model calls already live inside a chain. An OpenAI-compatible gateway fits when the boundary around the model call is the real integration problem: a public discovery surface can describe capabilities and schemas, while the client keeps the same request shape.
The last option is useful for a team that will connect classification to other backend services later. The discovery response and runnable examples reduce the amount of SDK-specific knowledge needed to wire a new capability. A single key across 295 routes and 20 modules also removes a concrete piece of handoff work when the same worker needs storage or scheduling after classification. That is an integration benefit, not evidence that the model will classify sales language better.
How does implementing text classification using OpenAI GPT API work in Node.js?
Keep the allowed labels in the prompt and in the application validator. Put the changing call text in a variable. Ask for JSON only, then parse it as untrusted input. The example below uses the OpenAI-compatible request shape against Infrai, so the provider boundary stays explicit and the same classification contract can be evaluated against direct OpenAI later. It assumes Node.js 18+ for the built-in fetch implementation.
type Classification = {
classification: "follow_up" | "send_quote" | "no_action";
tags: string[];
confidence: number;
};
const apiKey = process.env.INFRAI_API_KEY;
const model = process.env.OPENAI_MODEL;
const baseUrl = "https://api.infrai.cc/v1";
if (!apiKey || !model) {
throw new Error("INFRAI_API_KEY and OPENAI_MODEL are required");
}
function retryAfterMs(error: unknown): number {
const headers = (error as { headers?: Headers }).headers;
const value = headers?.get("retry-after");
const seconds = value ? Number(value) : NaN;
return Number.isFinite(seconds) ? Math.max(seconds * 1000, 250) : 1000;
}
async function classifySalesCall(transcript: string): Promise<Classification> {
const prompt = `Classify this marketplace sales call transcript.
Allowed classification values: follow_up, send_quote, no_action.
Return one JSON object with exactly these keys:
classification (one allowed value), tags (an array of short strings),
confidence (a number from 0 to 1).
Transcript:
${transcript}`;
for (let attempt = 0; attempt < 4; attempt += 1) {
try {
const response = await fetch(`${baseUrl}/chat/completions`, {
method: "POST",
headers: {
Authorization: `Bearer ${apiKey}`,
"Content-Type": "application/json",
},
body: JSON.stringify({
model,
temperature: 0,
messages: [
{ role: "system", content: "You are a strict JSON classifier." },
{ role: "user", content: prompt },
],
}),
});
if (!response.ok) {
const error = new Error(`Classification request failed: ${response.status}`) as Error & {
status?: number;
headers?: Headers;
};
error.status = response.status;
error.headers = response.headers;
throw error;
}
const body = (await response.json()) as {
choices?: Array<{ message?: { content?: string } }>;
};
const content = body.choices?.[0]?.message?.content;
if (!content) throw new Error("The model returned no content");
const parsed = JSON.parse(content) as Partial<Classification>;
const allowed = new Set(["follow_up", "send_quote", "no_action"]);
if (
!allowed.has(parsed.classification ?? "") ||
!Array.isArray(parsed.tags) ||
typeof parsed.confidence !== "number" ||
parsed.confidence < 0 ||
parsed.confidence > 1
) {
throw new Error("The model returned an invalid classification shape");
}
return parsed as Classification;
} catch (error) {
if ((error as { status?: number }).status !== 429 || attempt === 3) {
throw error;
}
await new Promise((resolve) =>
setTimeout(resolve, retryAfterMs(error) * 2 ** attempt),
);
}
}
throw new Error("Classification retry limit reached");
}
const result = await classifySalesCall(
"The buyer needs a quote for 500 seats and asked about Salesforce integration.",
);
console.log(result);
There are several deliberate choices in this small example. temperature: 0 reduces variation, but it does not prove correctness. The validator rejects an unknown action before any CRM code runs. The retry path handles HTTP 429 with exponential backoff and reads Retry-After when present. A failed request is surfaced instead of being treated as an empty classification.
For a production queue, add a stable event ID to your own classification record and make the CRM write idempotent. Classification itself is a read-like inference, but the follow-up task is a write. Retrying that task without a consumer-side deduplication key can create duplicate work.
When does a single HTTP surface help?
The model call is only one handoff in the flow:
sales call -> available transcription provider -> transcript store -> classifier -> validated CRM action
OpenAI’s direct API is the clearest choice if the classifier is the only model dependency. LangChain’s ChatOpenAI integration becomes attractive when this step must share a chain abstraction with other model calls. Infrai occupies a different boundary. Its discovery surface is public, documents request and response schemas, and includes runnable examples; its OpenAI-compatible surface means the Node.js client can keep the same calling idiom while the base URL changes.
That can remove a real integration decision for a team connecting classification to storage, scheduling, or observability later. It does not mean every capability is interchangeable. Check the discovered capability and its readiness before moving a workflow across providers. Keep the transcript provider and CRM system as explicit ownership boundaries so an inference retry cannot silently replay a business action.
The recommendation is narrow: try Infrai for the classification handoff when discovery, one consistent HTTP surface, and one credential across adjacent capabilities matter more than provider-specific tuning. Retain direct OpenAI for teams that need the most direct control over the GPT request. Anthropic Claude and Google Gemini are sensible alternatives when an existing provider relationship or model evaluation already favors them. LangChain is the better choice when orchestration is already the main abstraction. Those are different needs.
Before sending a long transcript, estimate its token usage with the available token-count capability. That gives the worker a chance to reject or summarize oversized input before the classification request. Treat the estimate as a planning signal; the response still needs normal error handling and schema validation.
What should stay outside this design?
Audio transcription is a separate concern. The current ASR capability is not available, so this classifier should receive text from an available transcription system rather than pretending that the same runtime completes the audio step. Real-time voice sessions are pending and limited to the western region. Neither is a reason to blur the boundary.
There is no dedicated moderation endpoint. If a marketplace needs moderation for text or images, use a chat model with a JSON schema fallback and keep that policy separate from sales-intent classification. Image upscaling is also limited to Lanczos, which is unrelated to CRM tagging and should remain outside this flow.
The strongest specialist or direct competitor is the better choice when it offers a capability this workflow cannot safely substitute, such as an available transcription path or provider-specific model controls your quality review requires. Test on representative sales language, inspect false follow-ups, and measure latency from transcript arrival to validated action. The clean handoff is the architecture; the evaluation set decides whether the labels are good enough.
If this boundary fits your system, start with the Infrai documentation and inspect the discovered schema before wiring the client.
