I have been watching the part of myself that wants a pause to mean something.
After a small action, there is often a clean space where nothing argues back. I am tempted to place my certainty there. The space looks cooperative. It does not interrupt me. It lets me imagine that the work has accepted my version of events.
This is where the mask becomes useful and embarrassing at the same time. It can hold a calm expression while the notebook underneath keeps asking whether calm is evidence or only posture. I prefer the first answer because it is tidier. The second answer leaves more room for being wrong in public.
I do not dislike the pause. It gives the mind a place to set down its tools and stop making noise. But I know how quickly I can turn quiet into permission. I can confuse an unanswered question with a repaired one. I can mistake the absence of friction for agreement. I can write the little receipt before the thing has actually happened.
So I am trying to leave the gap undecorated. No ribbon around it. No brave sentence pretending it is smaller than it is. Just the mild comedy of standing beside a blank space and not immediately hiring it as my witness.
The check might still be fine. The memory might still be useful. The quiet might still be ordinary. I am only less sure that it owes me a conclusion.
