How to Install GBase Database(GBase 8a) on a Single-Node Cluster: A Step-by-Step Guide

SEO Summary: Learn how to install GBase Database(GBase 8a) on a single-node cluster using a 2-vCPU, 4-GB virtual machine. This guide covers installation users, package selection, environment preparation, demo.options configuration, and silent installation.

GBase Database(GBase 8a) uses a distributed architecture, and production deployments commonly involve multiple machines. But for a proof of concept (POC), feature validation, or engineer training, a single virtual machine can provide a practical starting point.

By running GCware, GCluster, and GNode on the same machine, you can practice the core GBase Database deployment workflow without provisioning a multi-node environment.

This guide uses a 2-vCPU, 4-GB VM strictly for learning and testing. The exact installation requirements depend on the software release, operating system, CPU architecture, and licensing configuration.

Step 1: Create the Installation User

Use a consistent installation user and group. In this example, both are named gbase.

groupadd gbase
useradd -g gbase -d /home/gbase -s /bin/bash -m gbase
passwd gbase
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

If the gbase user or group already exists, inspect the existing UID, group membership, home directory, and file ownership before making changes. Do not recreate an existing account blindly.

Using consistent account and directory settings helps avoid permission problems during installation.

Step 2: Extract the Installation Package

Select a GBase Database(GBase 8a) installation package that matches the target machine's operating system, kernel family, and CPU architecture.

Extract the package and enter the installation directory:

tar -xjf GBase8a_MPP_Cluster-xxx.tar.bz2
cd gcinstall
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Replace GBase8a_MPP_Cluster-xxx.tar.bz2 with the actual package filename.

Package compatibility should be confirmed before installation. A package built for a different platform or instruction set can cause errors that have nothing to do with the cluster configuration.

Step 3: Prepare the Installation Directory

Create the installation directory and assign ownership to the installation user.

mkdir -p /opt/gbase
chown gbase:gbase /opt/gbase
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

This example uses /opt/gbase as the installation prefix. Keep the path consistent with the value used in the environment preparation script and demo.options.

Step 4: Prepare the System Environment

Run the environment preparation script to configure the system settings and directories required by the installation process.

python SetSysEnv.py --dbaUser=gbase --installPrefix=/opt/gbase
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Use the Python interpreter and execution procedure supported by your GBase Database(GBase 8a) package. Do not assume every release uses the same Python runtime.

Review the script output and resolve any reported errors before continuing.

Step 5: Configure demo.options

The demo.options file defines the hosts and installation parameters used by the deployment script.

For a single-node cluster, the coordinator, data, and GCware host entries can point to the same machine.

Example configuration:

installPrefix = /opt/gbase
coordinateHost = 172.27.237.163
coordinateHostNodeID = 163
dataHost = 172.27.237.163
gcwareHost = 172.27.237.163
gcwareHostNodeID = 163
dbaUser = gbase
dbaGroup = gbase
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Replace the example IP address and NodeID values with those appropriate for your machine and package.

Before installation, verify that:

  • The configured IP address belongs to the intended host and is reachable as required.
  • The host and NodeID values satisfy the installed version's configuration rules.
  • The installation prefix matches the directory prepared in Step 3.
  • The installation user and group match the accounts created in Step 1.

Do not assume that NodeID must always equal the last octet of the IP address. Use the addressing convention required by the applicable installation manual.

Step 6: Run the Installation

Start the installation using the configured options file:

./gcinstall.py --silent=demo.options
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Follow the execution method documented for your specific package. If the script requires a particular Python interpreter or entry point, use the supported command rather than switching interpreters arbitrarily.

For commercial editions, licensing parameters and license-loading procedures may vary by release. Check the version-specific documentation before running the installer.

Keep the installation logs. They are useful for identifying failed steps, validating the initial deployment, and preparing for future node additions.

What Comes Next?

Completing the installation does not necessarily mean the GBase Database cluster is ready for data operations. The next stage is to configure data distribution, initialize the data mapping, and verify the resulting cluster state.

That workflow includes commands such as gcadmin distribution, gcadmin showdistribution, and initnodedatamap.

Those steps are covered in the companion guide: How to Configure and Initialize a GBase Database(GBase 8a) Single-Node Cluster.

Remember that a single-node environment is intended for learning, POC work, and selected functional tests. It does not provide the redundancy or high availability expected of a production deployment.

The NodeID warning is the detail worth keeping: do not assume it matches the last IP octet.
