StoryTracker takes its own screenshots now

StoryTracker is the World of Warcraft addon that keeps a record of your character’s adventures: quests, zones, levels, deaths, bosses, loot and more. It comes in two versions, one for WoW Forever and one for Retail. Yesterday’s releases (Forever 1.0.4 and 1.0.5, Retail 1.1.3 to 1.1.5) add automatic screenshots at the moments that make a good story, and make the addon easier to install with an addon manager.

Screenshots at story moments

StoryTracker now takes a screenshot about three quarters of a second after:

  • a quest turn-in
  • a level up
  • an achievement (on Forever, only if the client fires the achievement event)
  • a boss kill
  • your first visit to a zone
  • other story moments, such as entering a dungeon or battleground, a battleground result, rare or elite kills, a new mount, epic or better loot, duels, joining a guild, a reputation standing going up, and deaths

There’s also an optional timed shot every 15 minutes, taken only when you’re out of combat, not on a loading screen and not AFK.

It takes at most one shot every 20 seconds. When two moments land together, like a turn-in that also dings, the shot is labelled with the bigger one. If you turn on “hide UI”, the interface is hidden for the shot while you’re out of combat, and it’s never touched in combat.

Each shot is logged in the addon’s saved data with its time, the file name WoW gives it, what happened, the zone and subzone, and your character’s name, realm and level. Log entries older than 30 days are dropped. Addons can’t delete files, so StoryTracker never removes screenshots itself; clean up the game’s Screenshots folder outside the game.

Turning it on and off

Screenshots are on by default, and everything is under /storytracker shots:

  • /storytracker shots on|off turns automatic screenshots on or off.
  • /storytracker shots <event> on|off controls each kind: quest, levelup, achievement, boss, newzone and story.
  • /storytracker shots timer on|off|<minutes> sets the timed shot (1 to 120 minutes, 15 by default).
  • /storytracker shots hideui on|off hides the interface for out-of-combat shots (off by default).
  • /storytracker shots log shows the last few logged shots.

Easier installs with an addon manager

Each release is now built with the BigWigs packager and comes with a small release.json file that says which game it’s for. Addon managers such as OmaForge use it to install the right StoryTracker for each client, so the Forever build goes to Forever and the Retail build goes to Retail. Installed copies also link back to their GitHub page now. Retail 1.1.5 updates the addon for the 12.1.5 client so it isn’t flagged as out of date.

Why it matters

StoryTracker’s notes are what turn a play session into a post on My Azeroth Life. Words were only half of it. Now each story moment comes with a picture taken right when it happened, and the log says exactly which shot goes with which moment, so a post can show the boss kill or the first look at a new zone instead of a stock image.

Privacy

Nothing changes here. StoryTracker has no network access, since WoW addons can’t use the internet. Screenshots are saved by WoW to its own Screenshots folder on your computer, and the log only records when and where each one was taken.

Download the latest Forever release or Retail release, or install it with OmaForge. The code is on GitHub for Forever and Retail.
