Not long ago, I stopped posting on LinkedIn every day. Almost immediately, I felt rested and free. Only then did I realise how much energy I had spent on conversations with people I did not need: people who smile today, then tomorrow place your research inside their own vocabulary and explain that it had somehow been there all along.
In every such dispute I have had, the standard has remained simple. Not once has anyone produced an earlier public construction establishing the specific object in question.
But the problem is larger than those disputes.
I see a growing attempt to blur the meaning of provenance itself. Some researchers say they do not follow the field. Others retrospectively reinterpret broad philosophical language as if it had already contained a later formal construction. A current definition is projected backwards onto an earlier text, and a different object is sold under the new meaning.
Independent arrival is real. A researcher may never have read the earlier work, may have arrived honestly, and may still produce something valuable.
What independent arrival cannot do is reverse time.
Independence concerns the path of arrival. Priority concerns the public record.
Date establishes sequence. Content establishes the object.
That means comparing more than vocabulary. It means comparing primitives, types, relations, constraints, falsifiers, and their composition. An earlier use of the words “identity”, “admissibility”, or “cybernetics” does not establish a later architecture. Equally, renaming an existing construction does not make it new.
A later work can be honest, independent, valuable, and still be later.
Right now, the vocabulary of the field is moving toward admissibility, identity trajectories, domain transfer, and cybernetics. There is nothing wrong with that. What is dangerous is when flatter later versions saturate the vocabulary until earlier formal distinctions disappear beneath more general language.
The standard does not need to be rewritten for the age of AI. If a public, indexed construction already exists, the relevant questions remain: what was published, when was it published, and what object did it actually establish?
Whether a later author encountered it directly, through a model trained on public material, or not at all may matter when discussing influence. It does not erase chronology.
Authors who possess their own load-bearing constructions rarely find this threatening. We exchange trajectories, compare objects, mark boundaries, and try not to damage one another. When a disagreement remains, the test is concrete: who publicly established what, and when?
I have also seen the opposite. People agree while the record is convenient, withdraw that agreement when it is not, delete comments when an earlier thread is produced, and block the person who preserved the screenshot. I have seen architectural distinctions settled in private, then flattened in publication; corrections promised, then attribution quietly removed.
This is why conversations themselves increasingly need provenance.
Navigational Cybernetics 2.5 will continue to make its constructions public, dated, and falsifiable. Its priority claims remain open to concrete challenge: show that the cited early artefact does not establish the claimed object, or show an earlier public construction that does.
What does not answer the claim is broad earlier language retrospectively presented as the object itself.
I once wrote that to love people, you must first stop being enchanted by them. Some people can withstand facts, boundaries, and another person’s priority. Others retreat into shells threaded through with fear and greed.
The less enchantment remains, the more deeply I love people.
