Abstract

Structural spin is the non-gradient layer S in a flow

ẋ = -∇V+S.

Its projection-relative signature has two formally independent components: a local differential channel d(S^♭), whose half is operational spin, and a global cohomological channel [η_S] ∈ H_{dR}¹(M), whose periods provide winding witnesses. This note separates that two-channel structure from three scalar readout families - period, path amplitude, and vorticity flux - and from a fourth object, the dynamic residual used in drift or cost ledgers.

The distinction is load-bearing. A non-zero period forces a positive path norm when both are read from the same declared one-form; this is the triangle inequality, not a lower bound on vorticity. Conversely, neither a path norm nor a vorticity flux determines the cohomology class. Explicit local-only and topological-only examples show that the two channels are logically independent over the class of declared signature data, while an equal-amplitude collision on a flat torus shows that an amplitude-only monitor is incomplete for winding.

On the compact admissible branch, the topological-only sector remains premise-gated by the harmonic obstruction space W_V. A registered finite spanning family of harmonic-evaluation covectors reduces this gate exactly to the zero test Ea = 0, so algebraic independence is not confused with unrestricted realizability.

The correction in one line

One non-gradient carrier gives two structural channels. Those channels can be interrogated through three probe-dependent scalar readouts. A drift or maintenance ledger is a further object and requires an explicit bridge.

The carrier is

F = -∇V+S, ω_S = S^♭.

For a fixed admissible closed-component selector P_{cl}, with η_S = P_{cl}(ω_S), the structural-spin signature is

Σ_{spin}(F;P_{cl}) = ([η_S], dω_S) ∈ H_{dR}¹(M) × Ω²(M).

Its two channels are:

the global topological channel [η_S];

the local differential channel dω_S, with operational spin Ω_{op} = 1/2 dω_S.

In an orthonormal frame only, the local object becomes the familiar antisymmetric-Jacobian formula

Ω_{op} = 1/2(J_F-J_F^⊤).

The shared object with the earlier physical construction is the antisymmetrisation operation and its tensor type. The directed-change field used there and the structural flow field used here are not silently identified.

The three readouts

Given a closed curve γ, a declared one-form α, and an oriented probe surface or 2-chain 𝒫, the note distinguishes:

W_γ(α) = ∮_γα

for the period or winding readout,

A_γ(α) = ∫_0^T |α_{γ(t)}(γ̇(t))|dt

for the path-amplitude or total-variation readout, and

Q_𝒫(ω_S) = ∫_𝒫dω_S

for the oriented vorticity-flux readout.

These are real-valued evaluations, not additional spin objects. Their sources and probes are part of their type. The dynamic residual Ω_t^{res} used in a drift or cost law belongs to a separately declared residual space; it does not become equal to a structural channel or readout by notation.

Main formal results

1. The channels are independent

On one flat torus, the field S_L = √2cos y ∂_x has a non-zero local differential channel and zero harmonic class. On the same manifold, S_T = ∂_x has the non-zero class [dx] and zero local differential channel. Both examples are non-gradient and divergence-free. Divergence-free is an additional property of these witnesses, not a synonym for non-gradient.

Therefore neither channel can substitute for the other: a local vorticity detector is not a complete topological-witness detector, and a winding detector is not a complete local-vorticity detector.

2. The universal norm statement is source-matched

For the same one-form on the same loop,

A_γ(α) ≥ |W_γ(α)|.

This is the ordinary triangle inequality. A non-zero topological period therefore forces a positive path norm of that representative. It does not force non-zero vorticity and supplies no lower bound on vorticity flux. If an experiment obtains amplitude and winding from different signals, the inequality is unavailable until a reconstruction bridge is declared.

3. Equal amplitude can hide opposite topological states

The paper constructs two non-gradient, divergence-free carriers on the same torus and loop with equal carrier-amplitude readouts but topological classes [dx] and 0. An amplitude-only monitor therefore cannot recover the topological channel even with the manifold, metric, branch, and loop fixed.

4. Topological-only spin is real but premise-gated

For compact boundaryless M, define

W_V = Φ(ker L), L(h) = h(∇V),

where Φ is the Hodge isomorphism. A non-zero class is carried by a divergence-free, operational-spin-free field orthogonal to ∇V exactly when it lies in W_V.

With a registered harmonic basis, an exact spanning sample family, and class coordinates a, the premise becomes executable:

c ∈ W_V ⟺ Ea = 0.

For a fixed ordered sample tuple the vector Ea, and hence its norm, is basis-independent. Its zero set survives non-zero row rescaling and replacement by another certified spanning family; its positive magnitude is not invariant under row rescaling or sample choice and must not be used to rank classes.

Empirical teeth

The cortical application is deliberately narrow. A measured rotating wave can instantiate the same invariant type - phase degree around a puncture - without thereby inheriting the paper’s identity semantics.

The first dissociation arm asks whether a certified winding index can collapse while registered 2-8 Hz amplitude remains above a calibrated floor and within a predeclared equivalence margin. Activity may persist while the organising winding structure disappears. The stronger survives-but-dead interpretation additionally requires an independent viability or continuation control and a predeclared bridge from the winding witness to the identity claim.

The dual arm asks whether the winding index can remain zero while a local antisymmetric-Jacobian score is detectably positive under a separately calibrated instrument and exchangeability-based threshold. This tests the local-only sector rather than treating absence of winding as absence of structural spin.

A failed certificate is non-applicability, not evidence for a zero channel. Population claims require preregistered eligibility, prevalence, sensitivity, dependence handling, and sampling rules. The formal existence of the two mathematical sectors does not guarantee their realization in a particular cortex, task, or estimator family.

Scope

This paper refines the typing of the preceding Structural Spin work; it does not replace its forgetful-separation theorem or cohomological obstruction. It makes no claim that every natural winding is an identity carrier, that the two channels are jointly unrestricted under every admissibility package, or that oscillation amplitude and winding are automatically comparable across instruments.
