SlowMate AI β€” Your Lazy Productivity Buddy 🌿

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 3: Slow and Steady

What I Built

I built SlowMate AI β€” Your Lazy Productivity Buddy, a simple, friendly productivity website designed to make everyday tasks easier.

Sometimes, the hardest part of a task is not doing the work but figuring out where to start. Whether it's studying for exams, organizing digital files, writing emails, cleaning up, or managing a big project, we all have tasks that we keep putting off.

SlowMate AI helps users turn overwhelming tasks into small, manageable steps. Users can enter a task, get a practical plan, track their progress with an interactive checklist, and copy their plan for later.

The goal is simple: less overthinking, less effort getting started, and more progress at your own pace.

Code

πŸ’» GitHub Repository: https://github.com/prathamyadavcom-spec/SlowMate.git

The project is organized into three main files:

  • index.html β€” Website structure and content
  • style.css β€” Responsive styling, layout, and visual design
  • script.js β€” Task planning, interactive checklists, progress tracking, and optional AI integration

How I Built It

I built SlowMate AI using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, with a focus on a clean interface, simple interactions, and a smooth user experience.

The website includes:

  • A responsive landing page with a custom sloth illustration.
  • A task planner that breaks common tasks into smaller actions.
  • Interactive checklists and a progress bar.
  • Suggested tasks for studying, writing emails, organizing files, and managing projects.
  • A copy-plan feature for saving the generated steps.
  • Optional browser-based AI integration using Transformers.js and the open-weight FLAN-T5-small model.

The built-in planner works without an AI model download. Users can optionally load the model to generate suggestions directly in their browser.

The optional AI model needs to be downloaded first, which requires an internet connection. After loading, inference runs in the browser rather than through a custom application backend.

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Open innovation matters because AI-powered tools should give developers and users more flexibility, control, and opportunities to experiment.

For SlowMate AI, using Transformers.js and an open-weight model gives the project a path beyond depending entirely on a closed AI API.

This approach offers several benefits:

  • More control: Developers can experiment with different compatible models and customize how the assistant behaves.
  • Privacy-conscious design: Task text can be processed in the browser without sending it to a custom application backend.
  • Fewer infrastructure requirements: The website doesn't need its own AI server to provide its built-in planning features.
  • Room to experiment: Open tools make it easier to learn about model integration and build new features without committing the entire project to one closed provider.

The current version is a starting point, not a claim that every feature works offline. The optional model requires an initial download, and fully offline AI depends on the model and its supporting assets being available locally.

For me, open innovation means being able to learn, experiment, improve, and build useful tools without making a closed API the only way forward.

My Agent Session

This project was built around the idea of reducing everyday friction through simple automation and optional open-weight AI.

I don't have a public DevRelay agent-session link to include, so I'm leaving this section without a fabricated link.

The Lazy Payoff

SlowMate AI is designed to reduce the mental effort involved in starting a task.

Instead of staring at a long to-do list, users can:

  1. Write down what's bothering them.
  2. Turn it into a few clear next steps.
  3. Complete each step at their own pace.
  4. Keep track of progress without needing another complicated productivity app.

The planner is designed to make getting started easier. Actual time savings will depend on the task and the person using it.

My favourite idea behind the project is that productivity doesn't always mean doing more. Sometimes it means making the next step easier.

Prize Categories

Primary theme: Slow and Steady β€” productivity through reduced effort.

Open-source AI: Transformers.js and the optional FLAN-T5-small open-weight model.

Final Thoughts

Building SlowMate AI was an opportunity to explore how open-source AI can support a simple, everyday problem.

I wanted to create something approachable rather than another complicated productivity tool: a little helper that reminds us to slow down, take one small step, and keep moving.
