Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 2: Side Hustle Submission πŸ’Έ

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 2: Side Hustle.

What I Built

I built HustleMate AI, a lightweight business toolkit designed for students, freelancers, creators, and small-business owners who want to turn their side hustles into more organized businesses.

Running a small business often means juggling product descriptions, invoices, and profit calculations across different tools. HustleMate AI brings these essential tasks together in one simple dashboard.

✨ Key features:

  • AI Listing Writer: Generate product descriptions tailored to the product, target audience, tone, and selling platform.
  • Invoice Maker: Create professional invoices with client details, item descriptions, quantities, and rates.
  • Profit Calculator: Calculate profit per unit, profit margin, and estimated monthly profit.
  • Simple Dashboard: Access the tools through a modern, responsive interface.

The people who could benefit most are independent sellers, student entrepreneurs, freelancers, and small businesses that need affordable tools to manage everyday work.

The long-term idea is to make practical business assistance accessible to people who cannot afford a dedicated marketing or finance team.

The project is built with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, keeping the application lightweight and easy to explore, modify, and extend.

How I Built It

I built HustleMate AI using HTML5, CSS3, and vanilla JavaScript.

For AI-assisted product listing generation, the project integrates Hugging Face Transformers.js and the Xenova/flan-t5-small model.

Here is how the main components work:

  • Frontend: HTML structures the dashboard, while CSS provides the responsive layout and visual design.
  • Application logic: JavaScript manages navigation, form handling, invoice creation, and profit calculations.
  • AI integration: Transformers.js provides the interface for running text-generation inference with the selected model in the browser.
  • Fallback experience: A template-based fallback helps users when AI generation is unavailable.
  • Invoice output: The browser's print functionality lets users print or save an invoice as a PDF.

The AI model assists with product descriptions, while the invoice maker and profit calculator use regular application logic.

One of the main challenges was bringing different business tools into one interface while keeping the experience straightforward for beginners.

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Open innovation makes it easier for developers to experiment with AI, learn from existing models, and build useful applications without having to depend entirely on proprietary AI APIs.

For HustleMate AI, open-weight AI and Transformers.js provide an opportunity to explore AI-assisted writing through an accessible web application.

This approach offers several benefits:

  • Accessibility: Developers can experiment with existing models and tools without building a language model from scratch.
  • Flexibility: The implementation can be modified and extended as the project evolves.
  • Learning: Working with an existing model provides hands-on experience with AI integration and inference.
  • Lower infrastructure barriers: Browser-based inference can reduce the need for a dedicated inference server, although model downloads, browser resources, and hosting requirements still matter.

I did not train a new AI model for this project. Instead, I integrated an existing model into a practical use case.

My goal is to explore how open AI technology can help individuals and small businesses access useful digital tools with fewer barriers.

Prize Categories

Primary challenge: Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge β€” Week 2: Side Hustle.

I am focusing on the challenge's core idea: using open-source or open-weight AI to build something practical that could provide value to people running a side hustle.

What's Next?

HustleMate AI is a starting point, and there is room to improve it further:

  • Add more listing formats and language options.
  • Improve AI model loading and error handling.
  • Add more detailed business insights and profit analysis.
  • Improve invoice customization and export options.
  • Explore additional open-weight models.

I would love to hear feedback from developers, creators, freelancers, and student entrepreneurs. What feature would make HustleMate AI more useful for your side hustle?

Built with curiosity, open AI, and the belief that every small business deserves better tools. 🌱
