Pressbooks is an open source book content management platform that allows users to publish books on the web and easily produce exports in multiple formats: ebooks, print-ready PDF, various XML flavors, and more.
Pressbooks was founded by Hugh McGuire in 2011 to democratize book publishing for self-publishers and small presses and to change the future of books on the web. The first book created using the platform was Book: A Futurist’s Manifesto (https://book.pressbooks.com), edited by Hugh & Brian O’Leary and published in a print edition by O’Reilly Media. Pressbooks is open source software released under a GPL 3.0 license, and has been on GitHub since 2013. Pressbooks now powers the open education resource publishing programs of more than a hundred universities around the world.
