OLED cleaning supplies: what monitor makers actually recommend

The manufacturer guidance below is summarized from the cited support pages; your exact model’s manual is the authority, not this article and not any product listing.

Search for “OLED cleaning” and you will find sprays, wipes, gels, and kits marketed for screens. Monitor makers’ own instructions are much shorter than the product marketing. Across the major OLED monitor brands, the recurring supplies are simple: a clean, soft cloth, light pressure, and liquid only within the limits the manual sets for your model.

What the manufacturers’ own pages say

Samsung describes a simple method for its OLED displays in its support guidance: power the screen off and let it cool, then wipe gently with a clean, soft, dry cloth. Samsung Display’s published cleaning test used generic, widely available supplies on its own QD-OLED panels rather than any branded cleaning product. Samsung did not test or endorse any specific branded cloth or kit. See Samsung’s support pages for the exact wording that applies to your model.

LG instructs owners to unplug the TV or monitor before cleaning and to wipe with a soft, dry cloth; its support pages caution against spraying liquid directly on the screen and against harsh chemicals. LG’s pixel-cleaning features (such as Image Cleaning/Pixel Cleaning on OLED models) are maintenance routines run from the menu, separate from physical cleaning.

ASUS describes a pixel-cleaning routine for its OLED monitors that runs for several minutes and should not be interrupted by unplugging; again, that is panel maintenance, not surface cleaning. For the surface, ASUS’ own documentation points to a soft cloth and the specific cautions in each model’s manual.

The pattern across brands: no maker requires a specialized screen-cleaning product, and every maker puts the model-specific manual above generic advice.

What a microfiber cloth does – and does not do

A clean microfiber cloth lifts loose dust and light smudges mechanically, without liquid. That is its entire job. A cloth cannot remove oils that have bonded to a coating, cannot fix scratches, cannot reverse burn-in, and cannot “condition” a panel. If a mark does not move with a dry cloth and light pressure, the next step is whatever your model’s manual permits – typically a cloth lightly dampened with water – not more pressure.

One practical note on cloth quality: loose-weave or dirty cloths can drag grit across a coating. A clean, tightly woven microfiber, washed without fabric softener and kept free of debris, is the low-risk option most manuals describe. If you want a dedicated kit kept separate from household rags, we sell Python Optic microfiber cleaning cloths on Amazon (affiliate link). That is a convenience, not a requirement: no OLED maker requires our cloth or any other branded cloth, and Samsung’s and RTINGS’ published tests did not evaluate it. Our cloth has not been tested on Samsung QD-OLED coatings by Samsung or independently validated by RTINGS.

Supplies to approach with caution

  • Alcohol and solvents: some manufacturers explicitly warn against them on OLED coatings; others permit diluted ethanol only in narrow cases. Unless your exact model’s manual allows it, keep solvents away from the screen.
  • Paper towels and tissues: wood-pulp fibers are abrasive next to microfiber and can hold grit.
  • Spraying anything directly on the screen: liquid can run into the panel edge. Apply to the cloth first, only if the manual allows liquid at all.
  • Compressed air at close range: can drive moisture or propel particles; follow the manual’s guidance.

A short routine that matches the manuals

  1. Power off and unplug; let the panel cool.
  2. Dry dust first: clean microfiber, light touch, one direction.
  3. For a remaining smudge, check the manual. If it allows a damp cloth, dampen the cloth slightly with water, wring it fully, wipe gently, then dry with a second clean cloth.
  4. Let the surface dry fully before powering back on.
  5. Run pixel-maintenance features on the maker’s schedule, not as a substitute for cleaning – they address the panel, not the surface.
