The Government of India has taken a significant step toward strengthening rural water infrastructure by extending the Jal Jeevan Mission until December 2028. The decision was approved by the Union Cabinet of India, with a massive total outlay of ₹8.7 lakh crore aimed at ensuring safe and reliable drinking water for rural households across the country.
Originally launched in 2019, the Jal Jeevan Mission has been one of the government's most ambitious rural development programs. Its primary goal is to provide functional household tap connections (FHTCs) to every rural home in India. Over the past few years, the initiative has already transformed water accessibility for millions of families, reducing the burden of collecting water from distant sources and improving overall living conditions in rural communities.
With this latest extension, the government is not only increasing the financial investment but also shifting its focus from just building infrastructure to ensuring consistent service delivery. The mission will now emphasize sustained water supply, system maintenance, and round-the-clock availability, making it more impactful for rural households.
