This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 4: Ghost in the Machine
What I Built
๐ DARK-IT โ Bring Dead GitHub Repositories Back to Life!
Have you ever opened a GitHub repository and found yourself wondering what is actually happening inside it?
A repository can contain hundreds of files, multiple directories, complicated code structures, unfinished features, and potential bugs. Understanding an unfamiliar codebase can become a time-consuming process, especially when there is little documentation or when a project has been inactive for a long time.
This inspired me to build DARK-IT, an AI-powered GitHub repository investigation tool that makes exploring and understanding repositories more interactive.
The project is inspired by the Hacktoberfest Week 4 theme, Ghost in the Machine.
I interpreted this theme as the idea of discovering what is hidden inside a machine. In this case, the machine is a software repository. Every repository has a story behind it: its development history, code structure, possible problems, and unfinished ideas. DARK-IT is designed to help developers uncover that story.
Instead of building another conventional repository dashboard, I wanted to create an experience that feels like investigating a mysterious or haunted codebase.
What can DARK-IT do?
- Ghost Q&A ๐ป Understanding an unfamiliar codebase can be difficult. Ghost Q&A is designed to let developers ask questions about a repository and receive AI-assisted explanations. For example, developers can explore how a particular part of a project works, understand unfamiliar code, and ask questions about repository functionality.
- Bug Cemetery โฐ๏ธ Every codebase can have problems that are difficult to notice during a quick review. Bug Cemetery focuses on identifying potential bugs and suspicious code patterns. The objective is to help developers discover areas that deserve further investigation instead of manually searching through every file.
- Evidence Wall ๐งพ An investigation is only useful when its findings can be understood. Evidence Wall is designed to present supporting repository information behind investigation findings. It helps developers connect observations with the relevant code or repository context.
- Repository Roast ๐ฅ Not every repository review needs to feel serious! Repository Roast introduces an entertaining way to examine a codebase and highlight areas that could be improved. It adds personality to the investigation experience while encouraging developers to think critically about their projects.
- Revival Plan ๐ช Discovering problems is only the first step. Developers also need to know what they can do next. Revival Plan focuses on turning investigation findings into actionable improvement suggestions. It aims to help developers identify priorities and give neglected or unfinished repositories another chance.
The overall objective of DARK-IT is to make repository investigation easier to approach, more interactive, and more engaging.

How I Built It
I developed DARK-IT as a full-stack web application, separating the frontend experience from the backend functionality.
Technology Stack
Frontend โ React, TypeScript, and Vite
React is used to build the application's user interface and organize the different investigation features into reusable components. TypeScript helps maintain type safety and makes the application code easier to understand and maintain. Vite provides the development environment and production build process.Backend โ Node.js and Express.js
The backend is responsible for handling application requests and connecting the frontend with the required APIs and AI functionality. Express.js provides the API routes used by the application.GitHub API
GitHub repository information is an important part of DARK-IT. The project uses repository-related information to support the investigation experience.AI Integration
AI is intended to be a central part of DARK-IT rather than simply an additional chatbot. The goal is to use an AI model to interpret repository information, answer developer questions, and generate useful explanations and recommendations.
Development Process
I started by developing the overall concept and designing an interface around the haunted repository investigation theme.
After establishing the frontend experience, I worked on the backend structure and API communication.
One of the important parts of the development process was understanding how frontend components communicate with backend routes and how AI functionality can be integrated into an application.
I also worked on preparing the application for deployment using GitHub and Render.
Building DARK-IT helped me understand that developing an AI-powered application involves much more than connecting a model to a user interface. It requires designing the workflow, handling requests, structuring backend functionality, managing API credentials, and making the application usable.
Why Does Open Innovation Matter?
Open innovation is important because it allows developers to experiment with technologies, learn from existing work, and create solutions that can be improved by a wider community.
For DARK-IT, open-source AI is particularly relevant because the project focuses on understanding and investigating software repositories.
Using open-weight models such as Gemma creates opportunities to explore how AI can be integrated into developer tools while giving developers more flexibility over model selection and deployment.
There are several reasons why this matters:
Greater flexibility
Developers can experiment with different models and configurations instead of depending entirely on one proprietary provider.Learning through experimentation
Working with open-weight models provides an opportunity to understand model behaviour, prompts, inference, and application integration.Community-driven innovation
Open-source projects allow developers to share improvements, learn from one another, and build on existing ideas.More control over implementation
Depending on the model licence and hosting arrangement, developers can have greater control over where and how inference takes place.
For me, open innovation is not just about using an open-source technology. It is about understanding how that technology works and using it to build something meaningful.
DARK-IT is an opportunity to explore how open-source AI can contribute to more accessible and interactive developer tools.
The Spirit of It
Every developer has probably encountered a project that was started with excitement but eventually left unfinished.
A repository with incomplete features, forgotten code, missing documentation, or bugs that nobody has had time to investigate.
Sometimes, the idea behind a project is still valuable even when development has stopped.
That thought became the inspiration for DARK-IT.
I wanted to build something around the idea that forgotten repositories deserve another look. Instead of immediately abandoning an unfamiliar or inactive codebase, developers should have a way to investigate it, understand its problems, and discover opportunities to improve it.
The Ghost in the Machine theme made this concept even more interesting.
A software repository may look silent, but its code contains traces of the work, decisions, and ideas that went into creating it.
DARK-IT is my attempt to uncover those traces and turn repository investigation into an engaging experience.
Because sometimes, the code isn't dead. It's just waiting for someone to bring it back to life.
๐ Don't just browse the repository. Investigate it. Revive it.
