I Replaced 4 SaaS Subscriptions With One Self-Hosted Automation Engine
Last year I was paying $187/month for automation tools. Zapier for webhooks, Make for complex workflows, a dedicated scheduler service, and a separate logging dashboard. Each one did a job. Together they were a mess — brittle integrations, silent failures, and a monthly bill that grew every time I added a "critical" new tool.
So I built Veloce-Engine.
What Is Veloce-Engine?
Veloce-Engine is a self-hosted automation engine that runs your entire workflow pipeline on your own infrastructure. No cloud dependencies. No per-task pricing. No "sorry, your plan doesn't support that feature."
You define workflows as code — triggers, conditions, actions, and error handling — and Veloce-Engine executes them reliably, logs everything, and alerts you when something breaks.
The Architecture
Veloce-Engine has three core layers:
1. Trigger Layer
Workflows start from any event source:
- HTTP webhooks — receive payloads from GitHub, Stripe, Slack, or any service
- Cron schedules — run tasks on fixed intervals or calendar-based rules
- File watchers — trigger when files appear in a directory (local or mounted)
- Manual triggers — fire a workflow on demand via CLI or API
2. Execution Engine
The engine processes each workflow step with:
- Conditional branching — if/else logic based on payload content, environment variables, or previous step results
- Parallel execution — run independent steps concurrently to cut total runtime
- Retry with backoff — automatic retries on transient failures (configurable max attempts, exponential backoff)
- Timeout enforcement — kill stuck steps and mark them failed instead of hanging forever
3. Observability Layer
Every execution produces structured logs:
- Step-level timing — see exactly how long each step took
- Payload snapshots — inspect the exact data at each stage
- Error context — full stack traces and environment state when something fails
- Execution history — searchable log of every run, filterable by status, trigger, or date
Real-World Use Case
Here's a workflow I run in production:
name: deploy-notification
trigger:
type: webhook
path: /hooks/github
steps:
- name: parse-event
action: json_extract
config:
path: "$.action"
- name: check-branch
action: conditional
config:
if: "{{parse-event.result}} == 'closed'"
then: notify-team
else: skip
- name: notify-team
action: slack_message
config:
channel: "#deploys"
text: "Deploy completed: {{trigger.payload.repository.name}}"
- name: log-result
action: append_file
config:
path: /var/log/veloce/deployments.log
template: "{{timestamp}} | {{trigger.payload.repository.name}} | {{notify-team.status}}"
This replaced a Zapier "Zap" that was costing $50/month. It runs on a $5 VPS. It has never silently failed.
Why Self-Hosted?
- No per-task pricing — run 10 tasks or 10 million, the cost is the same
- Full data control — your payloads, logs, and execution data never leave your server
- No vendor lock-in — workflows are defined in YAML/JSON, exportable and version-controllable
- Works offline — no internet required for internal workflows
Try It Before You Buy
The Veloce-Engine product page has a fully interactive demo. You can define a workflow, trigger it, and watch the execution engine process each step — all in your browser. No signup, no credit card.
