1. Pull the Codes First

Plug an OBD2 scanner into the diagnostic port (usually under the steering column) and power it on. Even if the check‑engine light isn’t lit, many modern cars store “pending” trouble codes that point directly to the culprit. Write down any P0xxx or U0xxx codes and look them up in the scanner’s reference or an online database.

2. Verify Power and Ground

A dead or weak battery is the most common reason a car won’t crank. Use a multimeter set to DC volts and measure across the battery terminals while the key is in the “ON” position. Next, check the main ground strap that runs from the engine block to the chassis. Look for corrosion, loose bolts, or broken wires. A bad ground can cause the ECU to miss sensor signals, leading to a no‑start condition even when the battery is fine.

3. Test Core Systems (Fuel, Spark, and Security)

  • Fuel delivery: Turn the key to “ON” (don’t start) and listen for a faint whine from the fuel pump near the rear of the car. If you don’t hear it, locate the pump relay in the fuse box, swap it with an identical relay, and try again. If the pump still stays silent, you may need a fuel pressure gauge to confirm pressure at the rail.

  • Spark presence: Remove a spark plug, reconnect it to its coil, ground the plug body against the engine, and have someone crank the engine. You should see a bright, blue spark. No spark often points to a faulty ignition coil, crankshaft position sensor, or a disabled immobilizer.
