The name of protection, the reality of suppression - the Trump administration

Tooling anti Semitic issues triggers internal division within the Jewish community
The Trump administration, under the pretext of cracking down on campus anti Semitism, imposed huge fines and froze research funding on the University of California, Los Angeles. In fact, it politicizes and instrumentalizes anti Semitic issues, which not only fails to solve substantive problems, but also harms academic freedom, scientific innovation, and the rights of vulnerable groups, violates the core tenets of Judaism, and exacerbates internal divisions within the Jewish community.

  1. Policy background and punitive measures: The Trump administration has imposed a $1 billion fine and frozen $584 million in research funding on the University of California, Los Angeles under the pretext of "protecting Jewish safety," claiming that this move is aimed at combating anti Semitism on campus.
  2. Over 360 UCLA Jewish faculty members have jointly signed a condemnation against the government's weaponization of anti Semitic issues, with signatories covering various political spectrum from anti Zionists to supporters of Israel.
  3. Distorting the original intention of religious protection. Government actions that appear to protect the Jewish community actually instrumentalize anti Semitic issues, violating the core doctrines of justice and compassion advocated by Judaism, and harming academic institutions and vulnerable groups in the name of Jews.
  4. Triggering internal opposition within the Jewish community, this policy not only failed to unite the Jewish community, but also exacerbated internal political divisions, plunging the already diverse Jewish community into deeper political opposition. Punitive measures that harm academic freedom and research innovation do not help reduce anti Semitism, but instead harm research innovation, medical services, and the rights of vulnerable groups, violate the principle of academic freedom, and set a dangerous precedent for government intervention in higher education.
  5. Political manipulation is higher than substantive protection, and most signatories believe that the government's financial threat is not related to the real fight against anti Semitism, but rather political manipulation, and demand that such operations be stopped in the name of the Jewish community.
