StudyBuddy: An Open-Source AI Study Companion Built for a Friend

Hacktoberfest Weekend Challenge: Build for a Friend 🚀

What I Built

I built StudyBuddy, a small AI-powered study companion designed for a friend who constantly struggles with one simple problem:

“I have so much to study, but I don't know where to start.”

StudyBuddy lets you enter a topic you're studying and turns it into a simple, structured study plan.

It can:

  • Break a large topic into smaller concepts
  • Explain difficult concepts in simpler language
  • Generate quick revision questions
  • Create a short study plan based on the time available
  • Help you figure out what to study next instead of endlessly scrolling through resources

The goal wasn't to build another complicated AI tutor. I wanted something my friend could open when they're overwhelmed and immediately know what to do next.

The project is completely open source, so anyone can fork it, experiment with it, and improve it.

How I Built It

I built StudyBuddy around open-source AI rather than relying entirely on a closed AI API.

The project uses an open-weight language model for the actual AI generation, with a lightweight web application around it.

The basic flow is:

User → StudyBuddy → AI model → Structured response → User

I focused on keeping the application simple and modular so that the AI model can be swapped out without having to rebuild the entire application.

I also used AI-assisted development during the build to experiment with prompts, improve the UI, debug issues, and iterate on features.

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

For a project like this, open innovation makes experimentation much easier.

With open models and open-source tooling, developers can actually understand what they're building around, modify components, run models in different environments, and experiment without being completely locked into one provider.

That matters especially for students and hobbyist developers.

You don't necessarily need a huge budget or access to expensive proprietary infrastructure to build something useful. You can take an open model, combine it with your own ideas, and turn it into something that solves a real problem for someone you know.

That's exactly what I wanted to do with StudyBuddy.

Thanks to the organizers for putting together the Build for a Friend challenge!

It was a fun excuse to stop building projects just for a portfolio and instead build something for an actual person. ❤️
