This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 1: Touch Grass
What I Built
I built Touch Grass, an AI-powered project designed to get people to stop endlessly scrolling and actually go outside. π±
The idea is simple: instead of using AI to keep you glued to your screen, use AI to push you away from it.
It helps suggest simple offline activities based on things like your available time, interests, and surroundings β whether that's going for a walk, playing a sport, grabbing coffee with a friend, exploring a new place, or just getting some fresh air.
The target audience is basically anyone who has ever said:
"I'll just use my phone for 5 minutes."
β¦and then looked up an hour later. π
How I Built It
The project is built around open-source AI, using [add your model/framework here] to generate personalized suggestions and interactions.
The goal wasn't just to bolt AI onto an existing idea. AI is used specifically to make the experience more personal while keeping the final action offline and in the real world.
The basic flow is:
User β AI suggestion β Leave the screen β Do something IRL π±
Why Does Open Innovation Matter?
Open innovation makes it possible to experiment with AI without everything being locked behind a proprietary API.
Using open-source models and tools means developers can understand, modify, run, and build on the technology themselves. It also makes projects like this more accessible to students and independent developers who want to experiment without relying entirely on closed platforms.
