Ireland Tax Guide 2026 — What You Actually Take Home
Moving to Ireland for work? The "Celtic Tiger" economy attracts tech professionals, pharma workers, and finance talent — but the tax system has quirks that catch newcomers off guard.

Key Traps for Newcomers
1. No Tax-Free Allowance
Unlike UK (£12,570) or Germany (€11,604), Ireland taxes from €1. The credits offset this but only partially.
2. USC Hits Hard at €70k
That 8% USC rate above €70k + 40% income tax = 48% marginal rate. Bonus? Overtime? RSU vest? Nearly half goes to Revenue.
3. PRSI Has No Cap
Germany caps social insurance at ~€62k. Ireland charges 4% on every euro — even at €200k salary.
4. Married Couple Assessment Can Save Thousands
If spouse earns < €42k, joint assessment shares the €42k standard band → big savings.
Remote Work / Split-Year Relief
Split-year relief (Year of Arrival): If you move mid-year, you're taxed only on Irish income from arrival date. Previous foreign income exempt.
Transborder workers: Live in NI, work in ROI? Special rules apply — check Revenue.ie "Frontier Worker" guidance.
Ireland vs Neighbours (€100k Gross)
| Country | Net Monthly | Effective Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Ireland | €5,202 | 37.6% |
| UK | £5,140 (€6,050) | 31% |
| Germany | €5,350 | 36% |
| Netherlands (30% ruling) | €6,200 | 26% |
| Dubai | €8,333 | 0% |
Ireland sits mid-table — higher than UK/Germany for high earners, but no 30% ruling equivalent.
