How Many Times Should You Steep Tea? Skip the Fixed Number
One long mug steep and a series of short pours are different tools. For oolongs and puer, short pours often give a cleaner cup: you see how the leaf opens and you stop before bitterness.
The trap is either a ten-minute dump or forcing “eight steeps” when the cup is already empty. Steeping count is feedback, not a score.
A simple practice
- Pour the first steep earlier than your black-tea habit
- Make the next one slightly longer
- Stop when the cup goes flat or harsh — not because a chart said ten
Leaf amount, tea type, and your palate matter more than a fixed number.

One comparative session teaches more than a rigid steep chart.
