OpenAI will start showing image ads inside ChatGPT, and the first place they appear is the image generator. The company announced the format on October 5, 2026, and said testing begins later in October with selected advertisers in the United States, BleepingComputer reports. OpenAI also named a long list of measurement partners. That targets a complaint advertisers have raised since ChatGPT Ads launched in February: measurement was limited.

How the visual ads will look

The new ads are pictures rather than text. According to Unite.AI, they show "product inspiration, product usage, or the experiences a product makes possible." They appear while a person waits for ChatGPT to create an image.

OpenAI says the ads stay apart from the user's own picture. "Ads will be clearly labeled, and remain separate from the image being created," the company said, as quoted by BleepingComputer. OpenAI also says ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers. None of the reports say which ChatGPT plans will see the new format.

Who will measure the results

Measurement is the bigger change for advertisers. Digiday reports that buyers have complained about limited measurement and narrow ad formats since ChatGPT Ads began in February 2026. Unite.AI lists the partners OpenAI is adding:

Job Partners named
Conversion tracking Hightouch, Tealium, LiveRamp
Attribution AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam
Full-funnel measurement Fospha, Measured, INCRMNTAL
Incrementality tests Haus, Measured, WorkMagic
Brand suitability pilots DoubleVerify, Integral Ad Science

Attribution means working out which ad led to a sale. An incrementality test checks whether the ad caused sales that would not have happened anyway. Digiday also names Kochava among the measurement partners. It describes the incrementality pilots as tests that compare different regions.

This builds on an ad business that grew quickly. ChatGPT Ads hit a $1 billion annualized run rate by August 31. In September, OpenAI began testing Sponsored Agents, chatbots that advertisers sponsor.

The early results OpenAI is sharing

OpenAI and its partners released a few early figures, as reported by Unite.AI. They come from the company and its vendors, not from an independent audit:

  • 52.7% of eligible one-day view-through conversions happened within an hour of the matching ad impression. A view-through conversion is a sale from someone who saw an ad but did not click it.
  • DV Rockerbox said WeightWatchers paid 15.3% less per new customer on ChatGPT Ads than its paid-search benchmarks.
  • Triple Whale said 93% of Portland Leather's visitors from ChatGPT Ads were new customers.

How big ChatGPT is next to Google

OpenAI says ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion people each week. Digiday puts the scale gap with Google in numbers. ChatGPT handles about 2.5 billion prompts a day, against roughly 15 billion Google searches. ChatGPT also offers a single ad placement, while Google offers several ad positions.

On privacy, OpenAI says the outside partners checking ad safety will not see private conversations. BleepingComputer reports that protections keep ads away from sensitive or emotionally vulnerable conversations.

What this means for developers

For marketing teams, ChatGPT is becoming a channel you can measure with tools you may already use. If your company tracks conversions through Hightouch, Tealium, LiveRamp, AppsFlyer or Adjust, ask those vendors when ChatGPT Ads data reaches your dashboards. Budget a small test before the format leaves its US pilot.

For engineers who run tracking, expect requests to wire up one more ad source. Map the new conversion events into your existing data pipeline before marketing launches a campaign, not after. Earlier reporting showed that OpenAI's ad pixel sets a cookie tied to ChatGPT accounts, so have your privacy team review the setup first.

For product builders, image generation now has an ad slot. If your app sends users to ChatGPT to create images, they may start seeing branded pictures there. Keep in mind that the published success figures come from vendors who sell the measurement.
