Etsy bans AI-made patterns and recipes from listings

Etsy announced new rules on October 22, 2026 that ban AI-generated sewing patterns, recipes and how-to guides from its marketplace. Most listings must now also show at least one unedited photo of the real item. The changes aim at a problem Etsy's own buyers raised: they cannot tell which items involve AI.

According to Value Added Resource, Etsy says that confusion is "one of the top three barriers" stopping buyers from shopping more often. AI-made art is still allowed, but only when the seller discloses it.

What Etsy now bans

The new rules name what Etsy calls "AI-generated functional instructions." Value Added Resource lists what that covers:

  • Craft patterns for knitting, crochet, sewing, embroidery, quilting and beading
  • Recipes
  • Woodworking and construction plans
  • Instruction manuals and other task guides

Crypto Briefing describes the same ban as covering recipes, patterns and how-to guides sold as digital downloads. It reports that Etsy pointed to buyers frustrated by faulty instructions.

Two broader bans sit alongside it. Listings made entirely by bots are out. So is the mass-automated creation of products or listings without a human's creative input on each item. Bundles of AI prompts were already banned in 2024.

What is still allowed

AI is not banned outright. Value Added Resource lists four uses that remain allowed:

Use Condition
AI-created digital art The seller discloses AI use and does not call it handmade
Patterns and instructions The instructions are the seller's own original work
AI editing of extra listing photos The edits still show the item accurately
AI images for digital products with nothing to show, such as audio The image is not misleading

Etsy requires direct prompting, curation and creative input on each item. Value Added Resource notes the rules do not say how much human involvement is enough.

The real-photo rule

Most listings now need at least one photo of the actual item against a real background. That photo must not be edited: "no cropping, resizing, straightening, lighting or exposure adjustments, or background changes," as Value Added Resource summarizes the rule. Patterns, recipes and seeds need a real, unedited photo of a finished result.

There are exceptions. Print-on-demand sellers can use approved stock mockups. Most digital downloads can show a preview or excerpt. Custom and made-to-order items can show real examples of past work.

How Etsy will enforce it

Enforcement starts slowly. Sellers see a notice in the listing form when Etsy detects an AI-generated image at upload, and Etsy plans to extend that check to existing listings. Removals of rule-breaking listings will expand "over the coming months," with no date given.

Buyers get a new option to flag misleading AI images. Those reports "will initially be used to gather information rather than trigger immediate enforcement," Value Added Resource reports. Repeat violations can lead to a shop being removed, and sellers can appeal through the Policy Violations page in Shop Manager.

The two sources differ on timing. Crypto Briefing says the rules apply immediately to new and existing listings. Value Added Resource says Etsy announced no separate effective date and no grace period.

James Ossman, Etsy's VP of Customer Operations, acknowledged that the company has not always handled sellers' AI concerns as quickly as they wanted. He said tools to prove authorship are in development.

What this means for developers

The rules reach past individual sellers to the software that creates and manages Etsy listings.

  • Review listing automation. Mass-automated listing creation without human input on each item is now banned. Tools that generate listings in bulk need a real human step per item.
  • Watch the API question. Value Added Resource asks whether the rules cover third-party listing and cross-listing tools that connect through Etsy's API. Etsy has not said. Builders of those tools should check before Etsy's removals expand.
  • Do not auto-edit the first real photo. Image pipelines that crop, resize or color-correct every upload could break the unedited-photo rule. Leave one original untouched.
  • Add an AI disclosure field. If your tool helps sellers make AI art, pass the disclosure through to the listing. Undisclosed AI art is what the rules target.
  • Expect detection to grow. Etsy already flags AI images at upload and plans to scan existing listings. Build for that check rather than around it.
